The subject was mythology and YOU were the one volunteering yr vast knowledge and how you used it as an excuse to read something else - Milton (I think) in elementary school. As if you had the faintest ability of comprehending it btw.

As for the Bard. I am partial to the Mechant of Venice. Frankly I think Shylock was screwed.

(oh, that's sarcasm RWC)

My *understanding* wasn't originally at issue, but insofar as it is required for appreciation, I assure you I understand plent of Shakespeare and Joyce, for matter that matter, more than enough to appreciate it. As far as Joyce is concerned, I'm not convinced a *complete understanding* of a work like FW (which, I have not really read) is even possible. But, digressing, I reiterate that understand enough to make a claim of appreciation

And ole Freud was very adept at interpreting their myths along with Jung - If one throws the whole of Mythology in to the mix then one would have to go with the Greeks, but that is a bit unfair since I read this as a comparison of playwright. If one through Chrisitanity into the mix and credited it to Shakespeare that would be unfair. Sorry for the ramble, but I think you get the point.

So I will tell you as story - I assume you know about the Eicureans. They have the best preserved ampitheater that is still in full funciton. As you know it is a semicircle built of rocks. there is a round stone where the *stage* is about three feet in diameter. When one stands on this stone it acts like a microphone and booms ones voices up to the highest tiers in the *cheep seats* It is really quite amazint - Thought =you would be interested

This is my take: I'd much rather read Shakespeare (he was a master of language) but I'd much rather see a Greek play. The Greek masters had better stories to tell and I think they way in which they were told were a better fit for the stage than Shakespeare's work.

Amphitheaters have always amazed me. Quite the architectural and engineering feat. We've got an outdoor amphitheater-style theater about 30 minutes from here and a great company that puts on all sorts of plays there. It's such an awesome experience to see something there as opposed to the standard theaters of today.

No question about it, but there are some pretty amazing theaters around the world - Lincoln Center, La Scalla, The Paris Opera House, Hell tHE lION kING HHAS AN AMAZING STAGE.

I see yr point about the Greeks v the Bard, however, I look for different thinkgs and tend to see them all in the same light. It is more about human nature - The story and the setting is almost irrelevant - That is why Plays are so special - they can be interpreted in a myriad of ways.

Yeah, it'd be Hamlet for me too.

However, I've been liking Shakespeare's comedies much more since I've started seeing them performed rather than just reading them.

Will do, I have tomorrow off. I could use a good defense of the law right now, actually.

Is there one that's more a comedy than a history? I'm in the mood for something lighter (though I think I like Fallstaff already).

I know you said you don't like the histories, but I would like to recommend you read closely *First, Kill all the laqyers* - The true meaning is exceptionslly profound and I would not want to say as I feel one must discover it for oneself, but I highly recommend it. There is no law that requires you to read complete texts you know. Just a thought

At the time I read R and J and Merchant of Venice (10th grade), I was extremely unappreciative of literature and thus got nothing out of either, except a lot of frustration and pissiness.

I'm reading King Lear for AP English Lit at the moment, and in a few weeks - a Midsummer Night's Dream.

So far I'm liking King Lear and I would love to revisit RJ and MV and read the rest of Shakespeare's works.

Subject: Why did this thread get resurrected?

Much Ado is so weird and twisted. It only has two real characters. The rest of them are just deranged shadow-people. The villain is an afterthought, everything the prince says and does is absolutely sickening (which can actually be said of most of the "characters"). Oy. I do wonder what the Bard was thinking when he wrote that one.

It is a fun read. However, I don't think it's very good for the stage. The characters are too undeveloped. It's nearly impossible to do anything with them; I've seen many good actors try and fail. They're either boring and transparant or ludicrus (the Kenneth Brannaugh movie has examples of both). Except for the leads, none of them are real people.

Romeo and Juliet I don't much like; the other three tragedies are far better. I'm not too familir with the histories or comedies--what I've seen/read of the histories I've liked, and of the comedies I've disliked.

Macbeth, probably because right after I finished discussing it in AP English, I went and saw MacHomer, which has the same basic plot but is done with Simpsons characters and is outright hilarious.
