Subject: What will my resume say to employers....

For undergrad, I attended one of: Cornell, Berkeley, or CMU

I then spent 5 years working as an engineer for a Fortune 500 company.

I now attend one of the following MBA programs: Yale, CMU, or Cornell

A good friend from undergrad works for Booz & Company (formerly Booz Allen Hamilton), is a recruiter there, and is pushing me pretty hard to interview for an internship. While I am looking for a consulting gig, I would obviously prefer Mckinsey, Bain, or BCG (all recruit to some degree on my campus). I worried that if I end up a Booz for my internship, given my educational background, I will be sending a clear signal to M/B/B that I am not quite good enough when full-time recruiting roles around.

Am I correct, or am I being paranoid? Is an internship at a 2nd tier consulting company better than an internship at a more prestigious company in a different field?

P.S. Though I was not admitted to a Tier 1 MBA, I did receive a large named scholarship to my Tier 2 program and I do have a 99th percentile GMAT score so those two things on my resume might mitigate the not good enough impression somewhat.

Your resume will say where you went. Unfortunately, if you get an interview, you seem able to sink yourself.

Dude, you can't just let the caliber of your schools determine how qualified you are--sure they show up on your resume, but as the other poster mentioned, the company is hiring you for who you are, not where you attended school. Do you have any personal accomplishments that will stand out? Do you bring anything more than just your decent pedigree?

As for the internship, do it if you think it will give you solid work experience/background knowledge on the field and more to talk about during interviews.
