The British, in decline after the war, were too poor to have a space program of their own, so all of their engineering brainpower went into audio engineering at the time, and that's how they made all those great-sounding records which were so superior to American stuff.

There is a whole genre of dramatic 1970s Rock photography showing Brit engineers sitting behind enormous British-made Neve recording consoles which seemed like a direct, competitive response to the Life magazine NASA 'Mission Control' photographs of the period.

In addition, the iconic triumph of British sound engineering ('Darkside of the Moon') references the moon landing directly.

It was a matter of national pride. They had a real hangup about the 'Yanks' having outshone them.

The Alan Parsons Project was actually supposed to be their moon mission. Parsons trained for years as an astronaut before the project drastically shifted focus in the mid-70s.
