It's that it turns into a kind of Ensemble Cast somehow with black female 007, Ralph Fiennes, Silent Gen M, Eve Moneypenny, Nerd Q, Léa Seydoux, and on and on. Like we have to check on Ralph Fiennes Testifying before the House of Commons about the State of MI6. The world is not "safe" atm. This sort of narrative made sense in the 90s or something. I don't see how it makes sense atm.
Also shitty villians like Rami Malek and Christoph Walz's Blofeld.
Like sure you can be like "yeah Craig is better than Brosnan in some ways" (but sucks in others imo) but that accounts for like 25% of the Film. there's all this other shit.

Brosnan's films turned into pure 90s cheese and are hard to watch now, but Moore's became just as bad, and he still has Goldeneye which is top tier classic Bond.

there was a tone clash as well with the more grounded style of Casino Royale suddenly being transposed to cartoony supervillain global revenge plots and whatnot. Casino Royale was just about an arms dealer, and the script was able to work within that limited framework. With Roger Moore in a tuxedo you can do the Moonraker stuff but, idk, it just doesn't work in that dour 21st century pseudo-Nolan direction. |
