it was unreal man

a 3-D sandbox world where you could literally go around in a city and smash and shoot things, steal cars, drive around wherever you wanted, kill people, break laws, interact with the environment. for a teenage boy it was truly mind-blowing, unironically

just totally revolutionary and completely categorically unlike and above anything that came before it

world of warcraft didnt come out for several years after GTA 3 btw. and WoW was probably the next Step Change advancement in "holy shit, this is literally an interactive 3-D virtual world that you can Just Do Things in"

A funny WoW story that I think you’d also appreciate, anime slice of life superstar tp, is that back in college circa 2012 I had a group project assignment which included a retardedly attractive bubbly (crazy in an endearing way, maybe?) goth lite girl next door type who frequently complained out of the blue that her boyfriend was too addicted to WoW to satisfy her sex drive, and it always made me LOL internally because I could unironically see where both of them were coming from

Fighting (valiantly, one hopes?) through an extreme Autoadmit slowdown to respond to Pepito tp, tp

It’s crazy thinking back how many series I was introduced to by N64 because it was the first gaming system I ever played, quickly followed by a PS1 because my dad was a very kind-hearted prep who saw that one gaming system was not enough given how much my lovably 90s tomboy-lite older sister loved playing Super Mario 64 all weekend (an impulse buy of Harvest Moon: Back to Nature circa 1999 changed my life, unironically)

They are more Revered in the East, somewhat in the same way Indies are today. Konami self-published the Mystical Ninja series with a relatively small team, meeting all the criteria for Indie.

I can’t remember the thread but I was just reminiscing the other day about randomly renting MGS2 over a long weekend as a 10 year old, thinking that the cover looked cool and otherwise having no clue, and then somehow completing the entire game even though to this day I have no idea how because not only am I generally retarded mentally, but golden paws don’t even have opposable thumbs so a lot of random button mashing occured (just as Kojima intended?)

i preordered the N64. it came out just after i started college.

playing mario64 for the first time really was an insane, almost surreal, experience. i couldn't stop playing it and couldn't get over that videogaming had gotten to this point with graphics. goldeneye 007 and the zelda games (particularly OOT) were also really mind-blowing and incredible.

even though the graphics today are lightyears ahead of the n64, i have yet to be as impressed or amazed by a videogame experience as i was when the n64 came out. i guess it was the leap into true 3-D gaming that made it feel like a truly revolutionary development.

3 months later they were getting accused of having No Games. Couldn’t make this shit up.

Howard Lincoln successfully convinced the SDNY that donkey Kong didn’t infringe on king kong’s IP but he couldn’t convince the gaming press that Mario 64/pilotwings/Mario kart/Star Fox 64/blast corps/goldeneye could hold a candle to Jet Moto, FF7, Resident Evil 2, and Wipeout.

cowgod tp I agree with you about virtually everything past present and future but I just can't understand why you underrate Gamecube games so much - even though I'm slightly more nostalgic for PS3 due to it being the PEAK Thatgamecompany era, the feeling of living in the Dreamcast-PS2-Gamecube-first Xbox-BF1942 online [read: cyberlife with only Euro and/or East Asian countries having internet access] era was simply too gorgeous for words IMO (so feel free to disregard my attempt to use them just now, Thank!)

Too many GameCube games have better versions on N64. Not just worse for their time. Full-on Worse:

Wave Race

Animal Forest

Zelda

Mario

Star Fox

James Bond

If you were like 3 in 2001 you experienced it differently. The gaming public in 2001-2005 was like wow this sucks. Gamecube was marked down to $75.

Trot out the western Reprieve all you want. Metroid was just their way of being like “hey guys it’s T-rated. FPV. 9.75/10.” 33/40 from Famitsu btw.
