MGS covers the Nerd/Loser cross-section with Otacon, who loves both anime as well as Engineering. The series writ large has Losery liberal arts themes but if you've ever browsed any mgs forum, the fandom skews Scummy and dumb, they like snapping necks and think snake is "badass" and would be just as happy playing Splinter Cell if not moreso. Like you can have someone posting on a forum for the game who's like "that story is crazy haha wow just wow idk what happened anyways...." like they are used to just not knowing wtf is going on irl.
IOW, imho, the series has Cross-Clique Appeal which is why it's been so successful.

It’s hard to put the Splinter Cell games in one grouping. Chaos theory has a very different play style vs the original one, for example (action vs pure stealth)
