Chinese grammar is actually super simple and it’s far easier to learn than many Indo-European languages if you forego learning how to read or write |

Might start picking at DeFrancis, who afaik exclusively uses Pinyin for his grammars. Long-term goal is to be able to read Classical Chinese by way of 漢文訓読. Have a book on it (精講漢文) but that's a bit beyond my Japanese right now.
Classical Chinese has the most 180 grammar of any language imo, it's basically a free-for-all with infinite zero-derivation. |

Date: June 21st, 2022 10:46 PM Author: exhilarant brass place of business Actually surprised at how close Mandarin open/nasal-closed syllables are to Middle Chinese used as a basis for the Japanese readings, I would have thought they went further off the reservation. Also dumbstruck at this note on Wiktionary: "Mandarin speakers have a strong tendency to avoid monosyllabic terms. In order to satisfy this restriction, 很 is added before monosyllabic adjectives without any actual meaning. Similarly, Chinese people with monosyllabic first names will usually be addressed by their full name, even by their parents." |
