“Stop presenting your opinion as fact” — Nintendo Switch. The motherlode: an entire 100+ post thread devoted specifically to whether declarative statements like “BotW is trash” improperly present opinion as fact, whether “overrated” means everybody else is wrong, and whether every subjective statement needs an “IMO.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/189706-nintendo-switch/80099171?page=6

“Dragon Age 2 is better than The Witcher 2, and this is why:” — The Witcher 2. Probably the single best old-school specimen. One poster explicitly attacks the GameFAQs FACT/OPINION move: “if you state your opinion in a way that threatens” someone, they accuse you of presenting it as fact.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/975399-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings/59255750?page=38

“That was a surprisingly good End Boss fight.” — Ar tonelico Qoga. Poster gets accused of wanting everyone to “accept your opinion as fact.” Response: “Everything I've said has been my opinion. You know that, I know that.” Almost the perfect rebuttal to the entire GameFAQs convention.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/976762-ar-tonelico-qoga-knell-of-ar-ciel/58803215?page=1

“Newsflash: Mario is not Sonic…” — Super Mario Galaxy 2. OP actually preemptively anticipates GameFAQs posters saying “FACT =/= OPINION,” arguing that obviously debatable game criticism is inherently opinion and shouldn’t require constant labeling.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/559975-super-mario-galaxy-2/49799642

“Could this be…” — Final Fantasy X. An astonishingly earnest attempt at formal GameFAQs epistemology: “Subjectivity=Opinion / Objectivity=Fact / Opinion=/=Fact,” followed by an extended theory of “personal fact” versus “public fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/197344-final-fantasy-x/46437567?page=8

“Its IGN's OPINION!” — Sonic and the Black Knight. The entire topic is explicitly built around “Stop stating your negative opinions… as a fact. Opinion =/= fact.” It then becomes an argument over whether an opinion can ever be wrong.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/951327-sonic-and-the-black-knight/48423956

“Terra has brown hair.” — Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. Deliberately absurd parody. “Terra has brown hair” immediately receives: “This is just YOUR OPINION STOP STATING IT AS FACT.” Another poster: “Welcome to the Internet, where Opinion=Fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/943347-kingdom-hearts-birth-by-sleep/57808138

“Why is There Sway?” — Call of Duty 4. Gun-ranking argument produces “Quit stating your opinions as fact, please,” followed by the incredible addendum that this is “especially annoying” because the opinion contradicts the majority.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/939212-call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare/42780441?page=2

“Bat Country” — Guitar Hero World Tour. Avenged Sevenfold argument immediately becomes “Quit stating your opinion as fact. It makes you sound stupid.” Classic 2000s GameFAQs deployment over whether a band is good.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/944201-guitar-hero-world-tour/43431258

“I'm disappointed in Valve.” — Left 4 Dead 2. Someone criticizes Valve; response is “your OPINION isnt fact.” OP replies, “I never said it was fact.” Then everybody starts posting “Opinion =/= Fact,” “Fact =/= Sales,” etc.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/960511-left-4-dead-2/50289598

“This game easily has the best writing of any final fantasy game.” — Final Fantasy XII. A poster explicitly asks where all the usual “fact =/= opinion” posts are and accuses the board of hypocrisy for selectively invoking the doctrine.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/459841-final-fantasy-xii/41660191?page=5

“which version is better?” — Borderlands. Amid a normal platform comparison, somebody simply posts “My opinion is fact.” Almost a perfect distilled GameFAQs joke.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/942810-borderlands/52477589

“Tony Prince is literally the best GTA character ever” — GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony. Reply: “your opinion is just that. Don't state it as fact.” TC's complete response: “My opinion is fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/960355-grand-theft-auto-iv-the-ballad-of-gay-tony/52042073

“What is the worst gun in MW2?” — Modern Warfare 2. “Worst list ever” gets answered with “Opinion =/= fact”; counter-response is “But Fact = Fact, and fact is most of those guns are actually pretty good.” Excellent.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/951944-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2/55744175

“should I play on arrange mode first?” — Resident Evil: Director's Cut. Someone gives a strong judgment about which mode is better designed; response: “You're just asserting your opinion like it's fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/198462-resident-evil-directors-cut/58678068?page=1

“i cant choose whether to buy this or heavy rain.” — God of War III. A recommendation dispute concludes that “to state your opinion as a fact is just silly and childish.” Classic application of the rule to “which game is better?”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/943928-god-of-war-iii/53585261

“A tweet from Hideo Kojima..” — Metal Gear Solid V. Splinter Cell versus MGS gameplay argument. Response: “See I can talk as if my opinion is fact too kiddo.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/681794-metal-gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain/66506323?page=1

“I hope Rosalina is in the game” — Mario Kart 8. Character debate produces the wonderfully formal request: “stop stating your opinion as objective fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/700050-mario-kart-8/65285976?page=3

“Random Battles or Monsters on screen?” — World of Final Fantasy. One person literally says, “If you have an opinion you shouldn't be stating it as a fact then.” Another immediately asks how the first poster supposedly did that.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/168651-world-of-final-fantasy/73855178?page=1

“Never played the original RE2 - worth looking at it first?” — Resident Evil 2. Someone aggressively attacks RE7 and gets: “presenting your opinion as fact again.” The actual dispute is plainly over how strongly the opinion was worded.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/179835-resident-evil-2/77686070

“The remake ruined the atmosphere of the original = pretentious crap” — Shadow of the Colossus. Posters directly debate the distinction between strongly expressing an aesthetic opinion and “stating it as fact.” One notes both sides are really doing the same thing.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/211369-shadow-of-the-colossus/76303267

“What do exotic high boots look like?” — Dragon's Dogma. A strangely hostile argument about whether boots look bad generates: “Way to state your opinion as fact.” Pure GameFAQs because the underlying subject is literally whether boots are ugly.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/626514-dragons-dogma/63633243

“Pokemon 'Lets Go Eevee/Pikachu' is a fake” — Nintendo Switch. OP explicitly starts with “Just my own personal opinion,” but response #2 still says: “Stating opinion as fact...” You could hardly engineer a better example.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/189706-nintendo-switch/76624879

“Let's face it, The Wind Waker > Twilight Princess” — Breath of the Wild board. Poster objects to titles like “Let's face it” and “Can we all agree” because they supposedly transform personal preference into “my opinion is the truth.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/632936-the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild/69686201?page=1

“Incineroar is the greatest starter and you CAN'T prove otherwise!” — Pokémon Sun. OP jokingly calls his preference a fact. Immediate response: “Just because it's your opinion doesn't make it a fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/187276-pokemon-sun/75543077

“Actual Metroid 2 Remake? AM2R? lol” — Nintendo 3DS. “AM2R was pretty solid. I'll be surprised if this is better.” Response: “That's your opinion not fact.” Despite the original statement very obviously being prediction/preference.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/997614-nintendo-3ds/75455968

“This is a good game, why all the hate?” — Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi. Particularly funny reverse version: poster labels almost every criticism “Fact,” including that the voice acting is horrible and cutscenes are bad, then distinguishes dissent as mere “opinion.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/630324-dragon-ball-z-ultimate-tenkaichi/63655292?page=1

“What you want the next world game (if they make one)” — Digimon World: Next Order. Posters openly parody “you can't go around spreading your personal opinion like it's fact. This is Interwebz 101,” before arguing that bad design actually is fact.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/196176-digimon-world-next-order/78087832?page=3

“Lysithea's original crest is.....(spoilers)” — Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Speculation over an unresolved lore detail produces the accusation that opening a thread about your interpretation “screams a ‘My opinion is fact.’”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/204445-fire-emblem-three-houses/78278445

“Lysithea, Bernie, and Annettes FEH art are better than their 3H art.” — Fire Emblem Heroes. OP: “Its an OBJECTIVE Fact.” Replies immediately commence proceedings over whether he understands what “objective fact” means.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/204447-fire-emblem-heroes/78456462

“I want the old weapon/items selects back” — Metal Gear Solid V. Long argument over nostalgia culminates in “acting like your opinion is fact”; TC actually replies, “My opinion is siding with fact in this case so yes.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/718564-metal-gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain/68034312?page=2

“God of War isn't God of War” — God of War. Someone dislikes the new direction. Response reduces the entire issue to: “TC you just have an opinion. Your opinion is NOT fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/334604-god-of-war/76572771?page=2

“Poll: What do you think of Shinji Mikami?” — Resident Evil 2. A genuinely prolonged argument over “RE4 is a good game but a bad RE game.” One side repeatedly calls that an OBJECTIVE fact; the other insists it is inherently opinion.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/179835-resident-evil-2/76881367?page=10

“Watching clips of the original, it looks more fun.” — Trials of Mana. Poster explicitly warns: “Try not to let your OPINION… turn into a falsely objective FACT,” then complains this is what GameFAQs does daily.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/266210-trials-of-mana/78675266?page=4

“Tell me why I should try this game” — Mass Effect: Andromeda. One poster calls the game being “subpar” an “objective fact”; response says his judgment carries no special factual authority. Good example of criticism getting relabeled objective.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/168599-mass-effect-andromeda/76486301?page=1

“I don't understand why people thought this game was so great.” — Mass Effect 2. One side says review scores and awards prove ME2 is better than ME1; reply points out reviewer opinions don't magically become facts either.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/944907-mass-effect-2/59901427

“The most overated game ever?” — Red Dead Redemption 2. Extended classroom-style explanation of objective versus subjective: brown hat = objective; ugly hat = subjective; “overrated” = inherently opinion. Very GameFAQs Philosophy 101.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/200179-red-dead-redemption-2/77135831?page=11

“Is the forced aim sway when being shot at in third person in Online?” — Red Dead Online. Posters repeatedly accuse each other of calling subjective design judgments objective facts. It gets extraordinarily hostile over aim sway.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/248477-red-dead-online/77246747

“It's not cheesing if you kill Demon of Hatred by fall method” — Sekiro. Whether exploiting the boss is “cheese” rapidly becomes “Telling facts” versus “Opinion is not fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/241004-sekiro-shadows-die-twice/77749265

“Wow seriously TLoU 2 isnt even on gameFAQS 2020 goty poll” — PlayStation 4. Gameplay criticisms get dismissed as “subjective opinion,” followed immediately by the poster presenting similarity to Metal Gear Solid as “objectively fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/691087-playstation-4/79219399?page=4

“what is the problem with 3d sonic games?” — PlayStation 5. Poster receives “Your opinion isnt fact. Get over yourself.” His response: “Yes, my opinion is not fact. Shout the answers out when you know them.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/264562-playstation-5/80809707?page=2

“Who is the worst FF protagonist?” — Final Fantasy XVI. OP says certain protagonists are “factually” the three best. Response: “Your opinion =/= fact.” OP is annoyed that anybody bothered objecting.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/300958-final-fantasy-xvi/80661477

“Fact: The only game to get quick time events right was mass effect 2/3” — PlayStation 5. Title deliberately calls an aesthetic judgment “Fact.” Immediate response: “that's an opinion, not a fact. Don't be stupid.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/264562-playstation-5/80855887?page=1

“Original Trilogy vs. REmake Trilogy (RE1, RE2, RE3)” — Resident Evil 3. “The REmake still slaughters the original… and that's a fact.” Response accuses him of not understanding the difference between fact and opinion; he answers with the “opinion shield.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/278662-resident-evil-3/78549306?page=7

“New strategy game developed by Atlus and Vanillaware revealed!” — PlayStation 5. Contains the beautifully compressed GameFAQs sentence: “nah it’s objective fact and that’s my subjective opinion.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/264562-playstation-5/80565432?page=1

“The lame PS3 propaganda really kills the mood.” — Metal Gear Solid 4. Criticism of a Kojima joke is met almost immediately with “Your Opinion =/= Fact.” Another poster mocks the implication that disliking five seconds of a game means you shouldn't play it.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/926596-metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots/43786574

“Why is kojima so strict on keeping this PS3 exclusive?” — Metal Gear Solid 4. Console/platform argument gets the accusation: “Using your opinion like it's fact, it destroys your entire argument.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/926596-metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots/42928189?page=15

“Map Packs.” — Modern Warfare 3. Argument about whether old DLC maps are worth money descends into formulae such as “Telling =/= Logical Advice / Opinion =/= Fact.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/995751-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3/59756003

“Review with Takashi Tokita” — The 3rd Birthday. Someone says the gameplay simply isn't good; response: “ITT: Opinion = fact.” Particularly pure example because the first poster had literally added “as far as I'm concerned.”

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/951987-parasite-eve-the-third-birthday/58888804?page=5

“This game is dumb...” — Final Fantasy XII. Absolute advanced-course GameFAQs epistemology: pages of argument distinguishing “subjective opinions” from “objective opinions,” whether opinions must change to “align with facts,” and whether an “objective opinion” even makes sense.

The 2011 Witcher thread, the Mario Galaxy preemptive disclaimer, the FFX “personal fact/public fact” dissertation, and the 100+ post Switch thread are probably the four best pieces of evidence that this wasn't merely a phrase people occasionally used; GameFAQs users themselves were consciously arguing about the site's peculiar “declarative grammar = claim of objective truth” doctrine for well over a decade

``Keep in mind that these are all opinions. To anyone with a functioning brain this announcement of opinion might be obvious, even redundant, but this is GameFAQs and I'm sure some person will come on here and say "FACT =/= OPINION" or "well that's just your opinion" or something to that degree of stupidity. Of course this is opinion, anything on this site that's debatable, thus interesting, is opinion, so if you don't share this opinion tell me why instead of just saying so.``

John Oliver is the worst example of this peeve.

Surprising to see an anti-John Oliver take. He seems like the patron saint of cringey redditor/gamefaqs types.

“Nu, Noel, and Saya Spoilers” — BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Lore speculation gets slapped with: “stop stating your opinion as facts.” The poster then tries to prove Rachel objectively cannot be what the other guy theorizes.

Open thread

“FFXIV destined to be A Realm ReReborn” — Final Fantasy XIV. Extremely pure FACT/OPINION taxonomy: “I enjoyed Gigli” = opinion; “Gigli failed” = fact; “I enjoyed FFXIV” = opinion; “FFXIV failed” = fact. Ends with “Your opinion =/= fact.”

Open thread

“What is the quickest way to destroy Obsidian?” — Minecraft. Somehow becomes an epistemology seminar. One user claims calling a well-reviewed game bad can be a “factually incorrect opinion.”

Open thread

“ToTK vs Elden Ring” — Tears of the Kingdom. Poster explicitly complains: “People on gamefaqs have a hard time understanding their opinion =/= fact”, then produces a numbered Fact/Opinion classification of Elden Ring and TOTK.

Open thread

“Rahna? Minor ME1 spoilers” — Mass Effect 2. “Kaidan is boring” produces “Opinion =/= Fact.” Response: most people agree. Counter-response: “That's nice, but it still isn't fact.”

Open thread

“If you make rules for your 1v1s… you're not good at MW2” — Modern Warfare 2. Someone calls TC too young to realize “his opinion =/= fact.” TC insists his original post wasn't opinion. GameFAQs court is now in session.

Open thread

“Mario Kart 7 vs. Kid Icarus” — Nintendo 3DS. Magnificent multi-paragraph distinction between “OBJECTIVE facts” about controls and the resulting “SUBJECTIVE opinion.” Includes “More options > Less options. Every. Single. Time.” as allegedly objective analysis.

Open thread

“Best gameplay: KH2 vs KH3” — Kingdom Hearts III. Argument turns on whether “games consist of several elements” is “straight objective fact” while claiming combat is most important is subjective opinion.

Open thread

“Best opening intro in gaming?” — Xbox Series X. Poster says he did not give his subjective opinion: “I gave the objective fact.” Another poster responds with an image and suggests asking a five-year-old to explain opinions.

Open thread

“SF6 has now officially sold over 4 million units” — Street Fighter 6. Detailed demand that another poster “separate your subjective feelings from objective fact” while distinguishing “game was good” from commercial success.

Open thread

“Small update on the Nintendo vs Palworld lawsuit” — Nintendo Switch. Posters literally construct headings called “Objective Fact” and “Subjective Opinions” to referee an argument about whether Palworld's visual styles cohere.

Open thread

“I wish some of the characters looked as interesting as the mobile game” — Octopath Traveler II. OP's preference about character designs is accused of the error that “subjective preference is being treated as objective fact.” OP responds that he never intended his opinions as facts.

Open thread

“Arthur sucks” — Red Dead Redemption 2. “I like Micah better” followed by “this is an objective fact.” Response signature fittingly says you're entitled to your opinion, not your own facts.

Open thread

“Worth playing if you've played Second Departure?” — Star Ocean. “Departure has better voice acting” is declared a FACT; response stops everything to explain that voice acting quality is “purely subjective opinion rather than an objective fact.”

Open thread

“Sol Valley is kind of good” — Metroid Prime 4. Extremely advanced form: one poster complains arguments always start with someone claiming subjective opinion is objective fact; response says quality actually can be objectively measured according to accepted standards.

Open thread

“What are this game's greatest strengths?” — Final Fantasy XII. “Most involved gameplay — not opinion, fact.” Reply produces examples: Fran has huge ears = FACT; Fran is cute = OPINION; gameplay good = OPINION.

Open thread

“Wii U droughts vs switch droughts” — Nintendo Switch. Poster says he stopped listening to GameFAQs because users are “using opinion as fact” when declaring software droughts according to the genres they personally play.

Open thread

“WTF is going on... Story mode?!?” — Final Fantasy XIII. One of the best. “What you have said… is an opinion, not a fact. You can't turn your opinions into objective facts.” Response: “A gaming forum is designed for posting opinions, not publishing facts or peer-reviewed articles. Why are you here?”

Open thread

“POLL: Why does console gaming suck?” — PC. OP helpfully labels his anti-console claims “FACT, not opinion”, including the proposition that developing with consoles in mind lowers game quality.

Open thread

“Best way to describe Syndicate, fun but STUPID” — Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Response simply: “It's opinion, not fact, and I don't share it, good day sir.”

Open thread

“I am an enormous Lufia fan and I adore this game!” — Lufia. A spectacular extended FACT/OPINION battle. One poster insists almost all quality judgments are opinion; another answers: “No. Just no. What I've said is 90% objective. True quality… objectively exists.”

Open thread

“What's so special about the graphics?” — The Last of Us Part II. Poster: gameplay better, more fun, better music: “fact not opinion.” Response: “Your gameplay preference cannot be a fact.”

Open thread

“What franchise is the definition of AAA?” — Nintendo Switch. Somebody asks if another user understands a subjective opinion; response: “‘Subjective opinions’ are worthless. Objectively, AAA means high budget.”

Open thread

“So when a ‘Best Resident Evil?’ poll comes out…” — Resident Evil 7. OP begins by explicitly saying it's subjective opinion, then proceeds to make technical/gameplay comparisons. A useful example where somebody actually uses the GameFAQs-required warning label.

Open thread

“How come some Nintendo fans can't handle objective criticism?” — Nintendo Switch. Reply says the phrase “objective fact” itself has become an obvious trolling device on the board, with people using it obnoxiously to elevate criticism.

Open thread

“Please, tell me the composer for this is the same as Portable Ops'…” — Peace Walker. Music argument devolves into “everything you said is still opinion, not fact,” followed by the obvious question: “Now is this an opinion or a fact?”

Open thread

“What's the point of MH anymore” — Gods Eater Burst. Response explicitly orders TC to state opinions proudly “as long as you acknowledge that it is just that, your opinion, not fact.” Next poster: “If only half the people on Gamefaqs understood such a simple concept.”

Open thread

“Check out this college admissions essay someone wrote about Goku” — Dragon Ball. “Goku is a hero… That's objective fact whether you like it or not.” Applied, naturally, to whether an essay understands Goku correctly.

Open thread

“Casca is just like Dark Souls 3” — Dark Souls III. “Berserk is the greatest story ever told by anyone ever. That's fact, not opinion.” Exactly the inverse form of the meme.

Open thread

“Do not buy this game on PS4.” — Skyrim Special Edition. Somebody says mods were the remaster's biggest selling point. Response edits in “in my opinion” and says: “Don't spout opinion as fact in the future. Thanks. :)” This is almost laboratory-grade GameFAQs.

Open thread

“What is considered ‘trolling’ and what is considered an opinion?” — Ask the Mods. A moderator-board discussion actually lists “stating an opinion as fact in an attempt to deceive or anger” as one way an ostensibly differing opinion can become trolling. Useful because the phrase reaches the site's moderation discourse itself.

Open thread

“Why does everyone say that the Famicom version is superior?” — Final Fantasy III. Reply: people prefer the Famicom version and are “confusing opinion with fact. It's just strictly opinion.”

Open thread

“What is the difference between subjective and objective criticism?” — PlayStation 5. Literally seven pages devoted to this question. Representative definition: objective = game runs at 30fps; subjective = game's story sucks. Naturally they then disagree about whether inability to jump constitutes an objective “flaw.”

Open thread

“Joystiq review! 3 stars out of five” — RAGE. One of the best finds in either batch. Someone accuses the reviewer of “presenting opinions as fact.” Response: “Where do you Gamefaqers get this notion that it's necessary or desirable to explicitly qualify any statement that could possibly be disagreed with as an opinion?” This is 2011.

Open thread

“I have completed all campaigns on expert on L4D1…” — Left 4 Dead 2. Achievement argument includes direct accusation that another user is “stating opinion as fact.”

Open thread

“How fast can I finish this pile of dung?” — Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Immediate response: “I like how TC states his opinions as fact.” TC's answer is essentially “you fanboys just refuse to recognize the game is a turd.”

Open thread

“This is the best track from an anime in recent history.” — Anime & Manga. Reply: “Does literally everyone on gamefaqs state their opinions as fact?” Possibly the most direct evidence that users themselves recognized it as a site-wide tic.

Open thread

“Helena Parker (Spoilers.)” — Resident Evil 6. Identity speculation escalates to a demand for “actual proof… than just blindly coming into threads and stating your opinion as fact.”

Open thread

“OK, I began a preorder for The Last Story today.” — The Last Story. Poster argues acclaimed games should be considered objectively “very good”: someone calling them bad because they personally disliked them is “clearly confusing opinion with fact.” An interesting reverse use of the doctrine.

Open thread

“In 20 years time, how do you think people will look back upon the Switch” — Nintendo Switch. One poster insists he never treated his opinion as fact. Response: “You always treat your opinion as fact.” The disputed subject is whether the Wii library was terrible.

Open thread

“Can you trade DLC Pokemon to Scarlet and Violet (non-DLC)” — Pokémon Scarlet. Poster casually says the DLC story “really blows.” Immediate response: “Love when people state their opinions as fact.” Original poster answers that anyone unable to recognize an obviously subjective sentence without a disclaimer has only himself to blame. Excellent.

Open thread

“SF6 art style is not gonna be what most fans expect…” — Street Fighter 6. Huge argument over whether SF6 objectively has “the best models, most realism, best lighting, best palette, best animation…” Opponent: “That's a matter of opinion, and not fact.” Poster repeats “Objective truth.”

Open thread

“Dragon Quest XI and repetitive music” — Nintendo Switch. Somebody calls the repetitive soundtrack being bad a fact. Reply: “It's a fact that your opinion is the music is bad… But your opinion isn't some objective truth.”

Open thread

“This game really didn't need to exist” — Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Poster gets accused of trying to turn opinion into fact and responds: “to say that I'm trying to ‘turn opinion into fact’ demonstrates a misunderstanding of both concepts. That is not how these discussions work.”

Open thread

“How well have previous FE games aged?” — Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Someone who dislikes classic-mode permadeath is told: “YOUR personal opinion is NOT an objective fact” and ordered to say he merely prefers casual mode rather than claiming the mechanic hurt the series.

Open thread

“great but very overrated” — The Last of Us. OP explicitly says he never claimed an “objective truth”, then immediately says several negative comparisons ARE facts. Response tells him he is “factually wrong” partly because 98% of people disagree. Advanced GameFAQs material.

Open thread

“What's the best rpg on Switch?” — Nintendo Switch. One poster argues maturity means understanding that your “personal contrarian opinion doesn't correlate 1:1 with the objective truth about something's quality.” Thus game quality is apparently an objective external quantity accessible to adults.

Open thread

“6/10....WTF. What kind of rating is that?” — Final Fantasy VII Remake. Posters argue reviews are inherently subjective; somebody sarcastically asks whether having a YouTube channel automatically transforms a review into “objective truth.”

Open thread

“Don't understand the low grades on the Dungeon games” — Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. Old one, circa 2008: “Stop trying to make your opinions into FACTS.” TC responds that criticizing him for voicing opinions while voicing your own is hypocrisy. This stuff really is ancient GameFAQs DNA.

Open thread

“Dragon Age: Origins was the last great RPG Bioware made.” — Mass Effect 3. Straight out of the textbook: “It's too bad you will find very few people who agree with your opinion. Always like how people state their opinion as fact though.”

The best five from this batch for establishing that this was an actual GameFAQs cultural phenomenon rather than random Internet phrasing are probably #18 FFXIII, #21 Lufia, #27 Gods Eater, #34 RAGE, and #37 Anime. #34 is especially murderous because a poster in 2011 is already asking, almost anthropologically, where GameFAQs users got this weird idea that every disputable statement has to carry an explicit “this is my opinion” qualifier.
