Yeah I think this is worse than the internet case though. Internet is obviously massively important, but AI is an even deeper technological shift. The internet externalized communication to a massive degree above all other previous media. But intelligence is upstream of every other capability. Thinking Machines are in an entirely new category of technology IMO.
yeah I agree. but also the naysaying feels different this time. with the internet it felt like much of the naysaying was basically just "that's for Nerds and Losers, will never be part of normie life". Now the internet is for everyone and Nerds and Losers are pushed into deep internet extremely online territory early on. AI dismissal often feels more performative and defensive. like it is people afraid to say it's significant, because they want to sound above-it-all and are afraid people will think they are dumb if they seem too impressed by it. maybe that's why AI is especially hated on in midwit spaces.
