The best advice I ever took from a book was to take the world as it really is, not as it should be according to a book. Another time, I was reading a book of advice in which the author claimed that most problems can be safely ignored out of existence. The world is so vast and life is too short not to excuse yourself from what can be left behind. Fuck the underbelly. You can learn only so much about what's happening in the capital if you choose to be imprisoned on an island you are continually swimming towards.
