i represent a nonprofit law firm in dc (their attys unionized), and a literal retard student from U of DC law sued them after she did a law clinic. she wasn;'t happy with the B- she got, thought she should have gotten an A+. she sued for negligence, IIED, and under FERPA (federal education privacy law). we filed a MTD. the court granted it and lectured this lady at the end about how she's probably not going to get a job as an attorney bc she filed this suit.

btw, i was involved in a civil lawsuit while i was in law school (dad and i sued one of his fuckpieces after he moved me into a condo she owned and then jerked her around about paying, lol. we wound up settling on favorable terms, RIP dad).

when i was interviewed by bar counsel in maryland, the guy was asking me all kinds of questions about the case. it was a very uninteresting dispute, but it got bar counsel's attention.

her filing this suit has probably a 70% chance of resulting in her being denied a law license. it was clearly vexatious and shows piss-poor judgment, not to mention borderline-retardation. you'd get away with this if you were waiving into another jurisdiction, but it's death for someone to get licensed initially. even in DC.

one of the bases for the MTD was insufficient service. she sent a process server to my office, i thought she was trying to sue me but she was trying to serve the papers on my client through me.

initially i was going to tell her that isn't how this works, but i felt bad for her and told the client they should authorize me to accept service. i told her i could accept, and that email service was fine.

she sent the fucking process server back to the office.

basically, the firm seems to be a garden variety shitlaw place where they bill by the hour, so there isnt CSLG-type money on the table. this means that the owner of the firm probably makes like $1.5m a year and everyone else is in the shithouse.

i worked at a place like this for 8-9 months after getting admitted. this is what happened to you when you went to law school because you had nothing better to do and didn't put in any effort at all.

if you're familiar with red, hot and blue in DC, this place was in the building that housed their arlington, va location. you could smell ribs and shit cooking from the bathroom for some reason.

my first day, i was asked by another assocate "hey, did Joe tell you that you're an independent contractor and have to pay your own payroll taxes, and he pays you $25 per hour that you actually bill?" he had not told me this. i went and sat in a bathroom stall smelling chain bbq, put my head in my hands and sat there for nearly an hour about to cry.

fuck me, that was awful. i can't believe i stuck with law. anyway.

btw my wife (then gf) worked in that same building until the pandemic (she is now 100% WFH). the shitlaw firm survived until about 2016 when the owner died of ass cancer. she would always tell me that she'd see these very sad and dejected mid/late-20s guys getting on the elevator with her and hitting floor 7 and she thought "poor fucker works at Cunningham and Associates." lol.
