he's 5. it's a program for 5-8, which is a huge size/maturity difference, and all the kids are together. it's 2 days a week, and 1 day is practice/skills and 1 day is games.

we had the first practice/skills session. there's about 40 kids total. they broke the kids into 4 different stations of about 10 people. one was sprinting, one was dribbling, one was kicking into a goal, and one was passing.

other than the passing, each station was one kid at a time. so you had 10 kids all lined up to kick 3 balls into a goal, and then back of the line.

it seemed like a lot of standing around doing nothing, and very little doing. could have done everything he did in an hour in our backyard in 5 mins.

does this sound normal or does it sound like a shitty program? seems like too many kids, too big an age range, etc.

CR. Too much standing around and too big a group. Bad program or bad management of the program. The good soccer programs my kids have done keep the kids engaged. E.g., for 5 year olds: 20 cones on the field, each kid has a ball and is running around trying to kick his ball into cones to knock them over; kids dribble down the field in waves of 4 kids and shoot on the goal. I don't mean those programs were "good" for developping future premier league stars. Only that they were fun and engaging for kids, which is what it's all about at that age.

Also, there is no way 7 and 8 year olds should be playing with 5 year olds. 7 and 8 year olds can play essentially real soccer games, pass the ball 20 yards somewhat on target, sprint down a 40 yard field, shoulder each other, and shoot the ball pretty hard.
