Knoxville and the smokey mountains area is beautiful
Portland oregon gets a lot of shit because of the nuts who live there but it actually is a pleasant place and has good food. it was probably the friendliest airport i've ever been to. they do like their bike lanes.

St. Louis sucks shit. At least the downtown area.
reminded me I was the OP of this thread. walking around their downtown at night was like I Am Legend and probably the only time I truly felt scared in a city

Brevard, NC. The town itself is myeh, but you are a short drive from about a dozen of the best waterfalls in the East and several of the best views on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville gets all the love, but Brevard absolutely shits on Asheville unless you care about microbreweries and art galleries.
The Grand Staircase/Escalante Monument is just as pretty as Utah's "Mighty Five," but has about 2% of the people. You need to go off road to see most of it, though.
And while I wouldn't go so far as to recommend Pittsburgh as a travel destination, I was there for a family thing recently and it was surprisingly 180. I was expecting a decaying Rust Belt hellscape, but it was actually fairly picturesque, and the museums and restaurants were excellent.

the sandhills region of northwestern nebraska is a very strange and hypnotic landscape, and it gets close to zero outside visitors other than some bird-watchers.

there are a lot of largely-unknown or unvisited places in the northwest. for example, the wallowa mountains near the oregon-washington-idaho triborder are supposedly 'america's alps' due to their similar dramatic rocky topography, but few people actually live near or visit any of the dozens of prominent peaks in that area. a wallowa hike even along established routes will usually not encounter anyone else along the way.

yeah, and that's just the start. forgotten little towns like imnaha, the hells canyon nearby, etc. and that's just one corner of eastern oregon, which has a lot of weird landforms and features in general. the drive around the steens mountains/kiger gorge/alvord lake is great when it isn't snowed out.
