"Most leisure travelers come to Nepal to go trekking. I wasn’t going to be in country long enough, and I can safely say that attempting to freeze to death on the way up Everest is not high on my things to do list. Even if I don’t want to CLIMB the mountain, i’d still like to see it. I think everyone is always a little bit curious as to whether or not Everest really looks that much bigger than all other mountains…it doesn’t. Some of the nearby peaks look almost as high and nothing about Everest seems particularly impressive to the untrained eye. However, the experience of seeing the Himalayas and Everest from the air is very worthwhile. Plus…if you actually climb the mountain you’d be too close to get a good picture."

there's some validity to what he's saying. i'll do the EBC trek sooner or later, but there's nothing unique looking about everest and you wouldn't be able to tell everest from nuptse and lhotse without someone telling you.

ofs. i guess i'm making the point that you could do random treks in the himalayas (in the everest region, or elsewhere) without doing the EBC trek and getting close to everest, and you wouldn't really get a different experience. people do EBC because it's famous and is a tick-the-box thing.

good commentary on RSF but tbh good commentary on a fucking lot of humanity. i think probably almost everyone has this instinct.

even if it's not pictures, the best part of an exciting vacation or finding a cool new place to eat or something is imagining taking your friends/family there
