It was basically the same level as a mediocre Bugs Bunny episode (disguises, all physical humor, stupid chase scenes) with none of the classic Disney “magic.”

What are the consensus low tier of the class Disney animated films?

Robin Hood also had no real classic songs. Just a bunch of dated sounding 60s folk ballads that sucked.

At least frozen had “let it go” and Olaf was an all time classic supporting comedic character

Can someone watch the black cauldron and tell me if its good. It was the last 2D disney movie before that studio blew up with beauty and the beast in 91 iirc. Some point to cauldron as the first artistic step in that direction.

I was something like 10 when that came out and let me tell you, it was my favorite disney movie by far (even though the reviews at the time were shit). And little gurgi was awesome.

I also had the sierra black cauldron game, which was 180, but those games are so clunky by today's standards ports of them are unplayable now.

Jungle Book still had that "Disney charm" to it, even though it didn't really have much of a story to it (much like Sword in the Stone, both were mostly just a series of interactions with other characters the entire movie, with sort of an overarching plot).

But Robin Hood was like a Bugs Bunny episode. Not really much charm, dumb story, etc

Sword in the Stone is another one that is "ok" but not great. Like I said above, most of the movie are the protagonists "interacting" with a series of different weird characters. Then at the end of the movie, literally the last 15 minutes of the film, Arthur goes to the festival and pulls the sword out of the stone. That pivotal part of the movie had literally nothing to do with Arthur's adventures for the other 75% of the movie up to that point (where he basically just transformed into animals and interacted with other animals)

you need plot consistency for disney "magic"? the magic for me is the playful randomness, which is easy in a film like alice but for sword in the stone it's merlin going to bermuda

its all late 60s folk music trash bro. Nobody sings those or knows the words.

Doesn't help that a Waylon Jennings copy was the voice of not only the rooster narrator, but the sheriff and also Little John

ANd like Earl said, they "borrowed" half of the character templates from Jungle Book (the bear, snake, lion, vultures, etc), which was a much more fleshed out film.

My favorite Disney compilation of all time is the "roots of goofy"

I must have watched that 100 times and I remember the theme song.
