Genesis fell apart because Gabriel’s huge ego couldn’t handle this fact

Collins is a T10 all time drummer for starters

I like Collins but his music is mostly shallow sounding sappy garbage. There’s a reason he was considered lame for many years. Gabriel was always the more interesting, socially conscious artist. A lot of Collins’ work sort of runs together. With Gabriel there’s much variety and originality.

Collins rep just gets worse. I don't care for that much Peter Gabriel but otherwise agree with this post. OP must be Lily

I think this is mostly CR. Phil Collins was always seen as really insipid yuppie music. Something adjacent to "easy listening" that could be played at restaurants or supermarkets.

Now when I hear Phil Collins music I like it, but I think that's driven primarily by childhood nostalgia.

Never liked Peter Gabriel at all, though.

Agreed. I like Collins out of nostalgia and think his career got a boost from American Psycho and our retro worshiping culture. But a lot of people overlook why the guy on American Psycho liked him over Peter Gabriel—it was shallow, easily accessible, yuppy music.

Sure although to be sure the veneer of social consciousness over what is still largely accessible (especially wrt South Africa) is part and parcel of the upper class yuppie lifestyle BEE is mocking in the “We need to end apartheid, for one” speech etc and that you can see real life examples of in PJ O’Rourke’s piece about attending a Harvard reunion in the 80s

But Collins and post-Gabriel Genesis just do it for me

both were absolutely great and yes I associate them with the same 80s likeable pop music genre, both had great songs that I loved as a kid. Honestly I think its impossible to say that one is significantly better than the other. And on the big hits I'd probably veer toward Collins
