For starters, you can buy Ultima VII for only $6. It's the best RPG ever made the biggest and most interactive open ever world created. $6. Even if you think new games are shitty, so what? There are million old games like Ultima VII that are cheap as fuck and will consume your life. Ultima VII will easily take you months, if not years to win (pretty sure it took me over a year) for $6. When you're done with that, you can enjoy other classics like Prince of Persia and Zork: Grand Inquisitor without spending very much.

The thing is he was working for Google the whole time he did that, making a fortune. He's since been laid off but he's still not taking any jerb that doesn't pay a fortune.
I think the industry is full of people like that at the moment: rich enough to retire, even if they got laid off in BIGTECH, and not hungry enough to dump a ton of effort into indie games. That's why I think there's no indie equivalent to Ultima VII. The talent pool is old/too rich
