it wasn't "highly rated." such a lie. it had a small number of viewers and the median age of those viewers was 68. advertisers don't pay much for shitty audiences.

on top of weak ratings, it had a massively bloated production cost and was losing something like $40 million per year.

The most fascinating statistic was that CBS sort of pushed out Letterman for Colbert to get younger because his average viewer was 58, and 10 years later, Colbert's average viewer is 68.

It's almost as if Colbert didn't get a single new viewer and just steadily lost Letterman viewers over the years.

NYT: late night shows aren't about revenue and proftis, they're about networks expressing their identities.

"Having a late-night star on the air most weeknights has been a powerful statement, affirming that the broadcasters were still in the game, still offering original programming taped before a live audience that viewers showed up for, year round. Successful hosts became their networks’ signature stars."

except viewers aren't showing up. hard to have a 'signature star' if he's beaming his show into dead air.

lol, CBS put out a statement confirming what had been reported: Colbert lost $40m per year. CBS says replacing him is a $55m/year swing.
