Not always a positive influence. Many stressed parents react to the stress by lashing out at the kids, their spouses, etc.

of course. and many older parents are too tired to do the job.

we evolved to have kids at a certain time. our bodies are built for it. it was no either to raise kids as a working class 20 something in 1900 than it was in 1300.

i know several people that had kids in their 20s and 40s and they all say it's better to have them younger even if you're struggling financially.

Pretty normal where I live. Go to any affluent suburbs on the coasts many first time parents are in their late 30s, some (more than some?) even in their 40s.

I wouldn't say it's ideal, I had my first at 30 and youngest at 40 and there is a difference. But it isn't terrible either. As a 45 y/o with a kid in kindergarten I am not unusual. Families seem perfectly fine and adjusted, just slightly older.

It's those who have a kid after 45 that is much more unusual though not completely unknown either. I think Mark Halperin had his kid at 50.

I had my kids at 37, 40, and 42. It seems fine to me. I can easily afford them, I have the freedom to really be involved in their lives and do things like coach soccer and volunteer at their schools. My wife is 6/7 years younger than me.

My only regret about not having kids sooner is that life is so much better with kids than without. Prior to marriage & kids, your non-work life is just filled with meaningless & pointless efforts at self indulgence and spiritual emptiness.

The point: my kids are certainly better off that I didn't have them when I was in my 20's, but not me.

While parenting isn't for everyone and there are lousy parents and good parents who got badly pawned with terrible kids, just about every childless adult I know is either in "waiting for the right spouse" denial, desperately trying to conceive, regretful or even bitter.

i had my kid at 37. financially, it's a lot easier. i think key thing is to be physically fit. i'm by far more in shape and athletic than 95% of the other dads in his class, regardless if they're younger. honestly, i'd be embarrassed to be as unfit and unable to play sports with my kid.

It’s fine man. Had my first at 36.8 and my second 39.5. Having some financial security helps. I’ll echo what the other posters say and that it’s important as an older dad to physically take care of yourself.

That includes flexibility type of stuff too. I have boundless energy and love playing for long periods and chasing my 3 year old around. Getting tired is never an issue for me. But, getting up and down constantly and picking him up and down can sometimes can tweak my back or something else. It’s fine 99/100 times but eventually I’ll tweak something. I started doing some yoga at home and it’s made a big difference.

If you really enjoy alcohol and other substances then you also need to accept that that part of your life is 80-90% over. I still love tying one on on a guys trip or a getaway with my wife but getting drunk around the kids or even being mildly hungover on the weekend isn’t acceptable.

why is this such a modern thing? the idea that if you aren't at 100% peak performance for your 4 year old at 8am on a sunday you are a terrible parent seems to have only come about in the 90s

my dad didn't drink a drop for 15+ years while raising me and was worse off for it

kids look to their parents for stability and safety. they notice subtle changes in your personality (like being hungover). They obviously notice the gross differences in your personality that come from being drunk or high.

Also, as the dad, your role is to provide positive energy and solutions. You cant play that role as well if you're hungover.

If you're just a straightedge guy optimizing everything around their lives that is what they will internalize. I would've been better off tempted to drink and have fun in high school, to say nothing of how it sends the message that children are their parents entire lives.

It's like because lots of boomers were raised by legitimate drunks they then turned around and said if you aren't perfectly attentive for your children at all hours of the day you're a shitty parent.

You sound like people I know IRL who were raised by high achieving parents, grew up to be high achieving, and then hamstring their kids by encouraging them to be losers. It is an incredible disservice to them.

Yeah my dad was a super type-A furniture salesman, and I'm really the apex of striverdom working from home 9-5 making 200k as a codemonkey. Maybe you should actually consider what I'm saying instead of just trying to jump to some kneejerk comparison. "Oh I perceive this group of dumb people to think this way! Therefore this person is also part of that group and his argument is invalidated!"

I don't think keeping drinking under control and in moderation and not using drugs is the same thing as being hyper neurotic all the time.
