All you have to do reverse engineer the "spymaster's" decision to grant that interview to the DailyMail. The BBC would seem more customary, followed by the Financial Times, Telegraph and The Guardian. The only reason for him to do this with the DailyMail was to make it clear that he talks to the DailyMail.
After that article ran, the DailyMail became a fountain of leaks for disgruntled government workers in the Biden administration. They leaked a TON of shit about Hunter Biden for example. Look at this:
