Date: March 11th, 2026 8:46 AM Author: Guangzhou real estate market Great book but in retrospect one divorced of any real compassionate humanism while also portraying the (what would later become the White Army) and "conservative liberal" establishment as a bunch of well intentioned paternal autocrats rather than a band of de-legitimized thugs employing rapists and thieves as shock troops to brutalize an already brutalized population into further permutations of exploitation Chooses to take on a Carlyle type approach to looking at the historical movement, to do this very folksy and arch-Russian village polemic "Bad people empowered (by whom?)" thing that makes for great drama rather than the demythologized analysis of the conditions leading to the events of the era which as far as the Russian Revolution goes is probably the more accurate and insightful analysis of the conditions involved. Kind of a shame to see a great piece of literature like that used as cheap propaganda, even in micro-form here on this forum, but hey! That, amongst much else, is what defines the nature of the people involved. Nothing's sacred if it has any use in being thrown as a cheap, disposable barb, lessening the impact of the real lessons of the text forevermore. |
