I am at a gig right now where they are "grooming me" for some type of management because "the young kids can't lead and aren't hungry". I'm GenX. I said something like "let's be fair, they entered a terrible job and don't have much mentorship from the generation above them and little communication with leadership. And that lack of mentorship is partly due to Generation X not being allowed to take a mantle of leadership so they have no knowledge to provide the younger workers since they're in the same boat". His response was to print out and put an article on my desk about "managing your manager" and then later forwarded me a speech by Vince Lombardi about hard work. Basically, he just skirted the fact that millennials (for all their foibles) got fucked. Boomers don't see any leadership potential in millennials but they think the same about GenXers but, IME, are digging around to find suitable leadership to replace them and coming up bare.

lol. in this case, the guy is very skilled, our org is built around one guy (think in the ballpark of a Buffet) so it's ONE OLD MAN then a thin layer of old men (70s ages) who've been with him for 30+ years and then everyone else. these old men actually know what the fuck they're doing, but they're in a technical field that requires Office/Excel proficiency. in other places I've been, the boomers might as well work at the post office.

This is right. And as a Gen Xer, I don't mind. That is part of the ethos-- whatever man. Like OK Soda.
