He got hit by a car then decided all of his books were ACTUALLY connected to the Dark Tower all along even if he didnt' realize it while writing them. Nerds loved this and felt really smart going back and trying fit all his books together after the fact. It was a trend that would not bode for popular media in the decades that followed imo.

i think it had more to do with marvel incorporating an extended universe into their comics decades before the films were even conceived, with most of the films being based on things that occurred within the comics many years ago.

Actually maybe Star Wars was the better comparison. Where a story isn't allowed just to have a Beginning and an End. Where you can keep globbing new content on and it turns out this character was actually in the Mos Eisley cantina scene all along too.

yeah, cross-continuity has been a thing with comics since the sixties and always of dire importance to Nerds. Disney merely capitalized on this built-in expectation. DC Elseworlds stories were the preferred escapism of the Intellectual iirc.

Crazy that his biggest legacy is writing Shawshank Redemption, the top rated film on IMDB

I think Greek mythology started this trend bro. Both the “shared universe” and “superhero” things.
