you can only truly 'contemplate the void' once in your life. there is an age-bounded window for it.
i sincerely believe this. ages 15-20 is the only time you have the fluid mental capacity to apprehend the situation, then you lose it with age.
that's why people often have dissociative 'existential' crises at that age, where they report feeling 'unreal' or that embodied 'being' feels strange and uncanny. they don't 'grow out' of these perceptions, but they stop being able to access the mental resources required to register them. the same way people over 20 can no longer hear certain sound frequencies because they can't access those frequency bands, perception of which is cut off to them forever.

i think there's a difference between a pedestrian contemplation of 'mortality,' writing a middle-age 'bucket list' etc, on one hand and an ontological confrontation with the nature of existence/non-existence on the other.
the vast majority of people never go through the latter, where you wake up in the middle of the night dizzy with panic dread because the state of 'being,' of being physically incarnate inside a 'body' is horrifying because... because... you cannot say why. why is there arbitrary 'being' rather than 'non-being'... etc.

i think there's some real truth to this, but i'd shift the window forward a little, with the upper bound being mid-20s. that's when this phenomenon hit for me (i think i was 22 when it started, 24 and change when it ended?)
historically your 15-20 window seems to be more cr based on the writings of thinking men. but those guys were much more intelligent, worldly, and mature than we are today at young ages. i think that due to a variety of reasons, men mature slower today, and so this existential confrontation with the abyss gets pushed back a bit
very cr observation btw
