Greenland and Panama Canal are pretty obvious strategically.
Tariffs are about building America manufacturing independence, rerouting supply chains around China and putting our trade partners on notice.
We don’t want to be like the europoors who have had to keep paying for Russian energy after the invasion of Ukraine. What will happen when China inevitably invades Taiwan? The US is fucked at that point and it’s better to divest now on our own terms. The “non-tariff” policies Trump is talking about = putting countries on notice about dealing with China. A great example is Singapore which actually has a trade surplus with the US, but allows Chinese shell companies to get around export controls of Nvidia chips. |

The US is simultaneously against China taking back Taiwan but also recognizes that Taiwan belongs to China (the One China policy). Yes, of course at some point they're not going to tolerate this bs and they will take what is theirs. We shouldn't go nuts over this though and certainly shouldn't go to war with China over what we recognize is their own land.
The real issue is this American notion that everything in the world is our problem. |
