not a mystery. The outside cooled first, contracted, and was exerting extreme inward pressure before it was pressed. The press is just helping it do what it already wants to do, giving it a nudge. I wonder how much heat was generated when that press got ruined

I had no idea you could configure glass in any way that would cause it to break the steel in a hydraulic press. I just figured steel was inherently stronger than glass at the molecular level.

It's not stronger than glass. This is like putting your foot on the gas your the car is already rolling downhill. The glass was already trying to compress inward itself due to the fact that the surface cooled and contracted while the interior was still hot liquid
