The Sega Saturn was swiftboated. Objectively superior to the Play Station.

Saturn was just ignored in the US iirc except by a dedicated cohort of Gen X importers

Swiftboating is when you attack your opponent for something that isn’t even true and which you yourself are WORSE at, and for some reason the attack hits REALLY well. N64 had Games compared to Switch 2 (and 1996 PlayStation1 for that matter) and was Destroyed iirc.

It was king everywhere irl except like basically No Games came out in 1999-2001, PlayStation ran shit in those years I guess. Journalists Swiftboated it though.

wow I looked it up and you're right. What a pathetic year of games. What were they doing, already working on gamecube? it had no games too imo

I think japanese people are underrated for being fucking lazy no wonder their economy & birth rate are in the toilet

Yeah PS1 won those years but N64 was underrated in its early years for some reason, it got swiftboated for having no Games when it had Games

Imho it’s not really laziness btw, it’s just that they didn’t see a point in making more Games for westerners, bc that’s literally who 95% of n64 owners were. They also put a ton of effort into games that never came out such as Earthbound 64 and whatever the 64DD Zelda was. Like why hire another 50 salarymen to make a Game that wouldn’t sell? With that said their approach with shitcube was also lackadaisical. Like there must’ve been no one working on Mario sunshine in 1998. They just realized one day that a Console was coming out so they made a Game for it. They somehow didn’t plan ahead. But honestly OOT must’ve been a ton of work imo.

Yeah you're right. N64 was ahead of its time but nobody else besides Rare could make 3d games at the time. Konami never really learned how. Metal gear solid was top down 2d sorta with polygon graphics.

I wonder if when movies with sound were invented like only 1 or 2 companies knew how to make good films and the rest sucked ass or still made silent ones

There were a ton of 3D platformers but it just would’ve felt ridiculous to pay $60 in 1998 for some slop. It had Rayman 2 and others.

MGS’s camera is Cool though. I get sick of constantly Controlling cameras tbh

3. Japanese developers deprioritized the N64.

Square, Enix, Capcom, Konami, and others had mostly gone PlayStation-only by this point. That’s why the 1999 N64 calendar looks heavy on Nintendo, Rare, and a few smaller Western studios, but light on Japanese output compared to the mid-90s.

4. The transition to next-gen was already happening.

By late 1998, Nintendo had publicly acknowledged work on the Dolphin (GameCube), so many internal and external teams pivoted. This slowed the pipeline for N64 titles, since the console was already being treated as a lame-duck system.

5. Fewer sports/annualized games compared to PS1.

EA and other big sports publishers had largely pulled back from the N64. Without yearly sports games to pad the release list, the gaps looked even bigger.

If you look at the release numbers:

NA had ~30 N64 games in 1999

PS1 had over 200

That ratio really tells the story — most of the industry had already moved on, and Nintendo’s tight control + cartridge costs made it impossible to keep a big flow of new releases.
