Family event in Venice in late June. Not particularly excited about it, but i do have friends in Barcelona I have been delayed in visiting.

Would it be insane / impractical to rent a car from Venice and scoot across northern italy, drive through Cannes, Antibes, all that...

and follow the coastal highway until it swings south into Barcelona?

Map indicates its like a 12 hour drive and I could stretch it into a week of a roadtrip.

Wondering if fees for one-way-rental across borders are prohibitive, if french coastal towns in late june / early july are packed with summer season, if the whole idea of crossing multiple borders in a rental car is insane, etc etc.

Ive never been any of these places. I could take a train I suppose, but in my fantasy with a car I can stop and explore wherever I want.

I have driven across from northern Italy through southern France into northern Spain. Spent about a week too from memory, had a great time, beautiful part of the world. Definitely do this.

I did this in a relative's car but had no problem. If you rent a car in Europe, there are clear and easily accessible rules about where you can and cannot take the car, generally across borders within the EU is fine, just double check when you make the booking what their policies are and carry the rental agreement with you just to make sure.

I imagine the one-way fees will be insane, it's not like dropping off a FL tags car in another state, you're dropping off in the wrong country, and I bet Avis in Spain can't rent out an Italian-tagged car so they would have to get someone to drive it back to Italy. But you can do that. Like you say, it's a 12 hour drive, allow 1 day to drive it back to northern Italy, French freeways are mostly great and pleasurable to drive on.

Southern France is beautiful and just driving around minor roads without knowing where you are going and just seeing what's up ahead you come across some beautiful nature and cool little towns in the middle of nowhere, great time.

I rented a car in Amsterdam and it had German plates and I drove it around other countries. Although I dropped it off at the same spot I think the country it has plates from isn’t an issue

fair, then I'm wrong about that part

I still imagine the one-way fees would be insanely high but I guess that can be found it in 5 minutes on the Avis or Expedia website by trying out a one-way booking

you can easily train this. you can also stop and explore when travelling by train. one-way car rentals to other countries is not feasible. We road tripped by car all around France, Spain, Portugal and Greece but we made a loop and returned car to same place.

this is a goddam nightmare waiting to kill you.

that stretch through southern france is not going to be a 4 hour drive its going to be like 45 hours

if this is early june you might be safer bc its still a little cold and beach weather.

short hot take: I do not recommend this unless you are going to be leisurely as hell. like stopping in verona, avignon, pretty much anywhere you want

I don't think that's true for late June early July, it might be for August

but the whole point of spending a week doing this is to go slow and off main roads

the French freeway system is good, and it's important to their economy just like the Interstate system, they don't shut down stretches of it randomly without extremely good reason

You need a car to discover hidden wine taverns and other things off the beaten path.

theres a great startup in parts of the Mediterranean called Y-NO that allows people to borrow cars from other afficianados of hidden wine taverns in order to go to hidden wine taverns to find hidden wine. I used it once and it was decent--the smart car was low on gas and wasnt fully vacuumed but it worked and the trip was a blast.

IMO Barcelona is overrated shrew trash. Once you get past say Marseille it’s a long way to SW France and while Nimes and some other places are worth a stop on your way towards Biarritz you’d prob end up stopping maybe like Avignon-Nimes-Carcassone-Bordeaux-Biarritz. I’d save Spain/SW France for another road trip so you aren’t so rushed. If you want to avoid different pick up drop off consider a loop mixing up the way in and way back between some of the following:

Venice-Bologna by train, Bologna is absolutely worth 2 days

Bologna-Genoa by train, also worth 2-3 days and can pickup/drop off the rental here.

Look at Portofino, Santa Margharita Ligure and San Remo as Italian stops and then west depending on your prefs…Beaulieu sur Mer, Menton, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Villefranche sur mer, Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, Antibes, St. Tropez.

I wouldn’t go past St. Tropez before looping back and starting the return leg. This way you can have time to actually enjoy places vs just driving. Everywhere will be very crowded in June/July. If you let me know what you prefer to focus on, and how many days it’s be easier to tailor. Great part of the world for a road trip.
