plus you have kids. $1.5M is the minimum i need as a single person. with kids i'd need significantly more to stop working

After inheritances I should be between $3.5m and $4.0m. Dementia Mom is early 70s though. So it could be a long wait.

I once went to work for a guy who was 74 years old. I thought to myself, "this guy is going to croak any day now." Well, it's been more than 8 years and he's still alive as far as I can tell.

what's the biggest regret old people have? working too much. i don't want to end up like that, and that's one of many reasons that drives my pauper lifestyle and high savings rate (i save 75%+ of each paycheck)

It’s not working too much. It’s screwing up relationships.

a rare disco fries CR

it's not the working too much per se, it's always along the lines of "I wish I had worked less and spent more time with my kids". you rarely see old people wish they had worked less because they regret not retiring earlier or whatever.

tbf, FIRE is a relatively new phenomenon. in 40 years we will have a solid contingent of chastened would-be lifehackers, wishing they had worked more so they wouldn’t have had to eat cat food in government housing for decades.

FIRE is not a new concept at all. What’s new is that people quit boring W2 jobs and become social media stars where they blather on about how great they are with money. Blogs become podcasts and YouTube channels and now they host events, etc.

Retiring may be right for some people, but it’s almost certainly wrong for someone who is in their 20s and weighing choices like not having a family to be “financially secure” instead. If someone shoots a nuke at the US or whatever all that wealth could be gone in an instant. Then who would you be? What are you made of?

Also, there’s the point about what is it that you want to do with your time that you can’t do because you’re working? It turns out that most people can dream up things to do, but restrict their spending because they’re “frugal” or whatever and they won’t go do those things anyway. Or they could do them while working.

FIRE is a dumb concept because it’s built around a static anachronistic view of what work is (the soul sucking office, the horrible entry level job) and a complete lie about what retirement is (a Pacific Life commercial).

Build a narrative around escaping the former for the latter and that’s a compelling and entertaining narrative!

IMO the FI part of FIRE is the most important. And additionally, some people fuck up FIRE; I've seen it first-hand. With enough money and some discipline, FI makes tons of things and life in general less stressful because you're not glued to a job. That freedom alone is worth achieving.

RE is where people fuck up. As I said, I've seen it happen: my friend won the IPO lottery and went FIRE at 32. But he was aimless, travel shrewing, picking up dumb hobbies just to fill his time, etc. After about three and a half years he got bored of it and went back to wagecucking. His brokerage account probably grows more per year than his salary (nearly $300k).

Having to restrict spending and be frugal during FIRE is called "lean" FIRE or retard FIRE, which definitely does not seem enjoyable. You need a sufficient net worth plus a cushion in order to live comfortably and not penny-pinch or stress over every expense.

I can't do things I want to do after work because I'm usually tired from wagecucking.

Giant TCR XL. Not sure what the exact year is, but it's one of the last aluminum models. I don't trust carbon fiber at my weight.

Tbf cars are mostly a massive waste and huge liability for proles. Car insurance, payments, tickets, maintenance (mostly skipping this one), a place to park, taxes and registration. Apparently some states even charge a tax on the value of your car every year like Virginia? Lol.

People are smart to skip car ownership if they can. We have one 10+ year old car and I hope we can use it for another 10 years. Cars are shit.

I bought a 2017 accord hybrid four and a half years ago for 22k. I plan on driving it into the ground and insurance is dirt cheap. Has not been in the shop for anything beyond regular maintenance a single time

the problem isn't cars are expensive, it's that proles are fucking retarded and buying 50k+ SUVs or pickup trucks (depending on the particular flavor of prole) fresh off the lot
