meeting from an app. this will be the first real date i’ve gone on since my nadir in 2022. she is about my age, short but runner-y, seems cute and wholesome enough from pictures. she has an MBA and that seems to be a major part of her personality given how she texts. when we confirmed, she signed off with “Let me know if anything changes leading into the weekend and I will do the same. Otherwise looking forward to it too.” i almost reflexively responded “will do”. she also seemed excited to tell me about “Systems Thinking” and its application in robust workplaces. I asked business dad over the phone if these words mean anything, and he seemed to think they are weighty and important. fuck it, i'm curious about the world. hell, i used to lurk on law threads here while i was in UG so i could learn what a tort is, i’ll happily chat about whatever the new six sigma is. she has girlie affects in how she texts too, like exclamation points and emoticons (note: not emojis), but the threads of business speak never entirely went away. of course, i seem like a caricature too. “do you like hiking?” “i don’t go on overnight trips or anything intense haha, but i like [nearby trails]. i love finding places near derelict service roads or the like and wandering out past highway’s end into artificial tree-lines and illusory forests. maybe there’s a whole world out there i can find. maybe there there are still Things in the Wood that sing their old songs. i know there isn’t actually anything magical or interesting there. but what if there is?” she seemed curious (or polite) enough to hear about the article I’m writing (largely for the other 25 people in the relevant subfield). we, both urbanites, are driving out to an orchard to play countryside and pick apples before going into the cutesy small town nearby to do cutesy small town things if all goes well. (what are cutesy small town things?) taking q’s, insults, suggestions, etc.

Good luck
Just think about how much you want to rape her the whole time and she will be able to "sense" your sexual "aura" and be drawn to you

UPDATE
i'm not sure what i expected, but it wasn't that. apple picking fucking sucks, that's no surprise, but we spent a long time talking at a wine tent thing beforehand and at a cutesy town coffee shop after. took a while to find her, one-armed awkward date hug, some initial discomfort in trying to find a non-alcoholic drink. she was pretty and reserved, we laughed and joked easily, but then it shifted. dating is going to be extremely hard for me in unusual ways. somehow her frustrations with entering middle age came up, which led to a conversation about making giant life changes to live more intentionally. she joked that i was too young to have a midlife crisis, and i let out all my fucking baggage. death, alcoholism, regrets, emptiness, and so on. she responded much more... openly than i expected. she had evidently been experiencing oddly similar feelings, and seemed to be addressing them through some sort of buddhist-derived new age something, but that is at least something to actually talk about. (i was in the fight of my life not to start telling her about her own religious beliefs.) i'm all in at this point. all the nervousness that i felt was out. there was physical affection, eyes almost never broke contact, and we really talked. i take it something happened to her recently, maybe a divorce -- phrases like "*we* bought this house" when she was talking about her dead cat, describing her attempt to transfer abroad from work to make a clean break, lot of loneliness in her stories and some explicit lamentation that making friends even in your 30's is hard, other connections even more so. we laughed more as the date when on and tension broke, but it was awkward when we parted. she said she sincerely liked talking and hadn't met anyone like me before. i told her i enjoyed her company, found her sweet and actually sincere, in a way that required some real vulnerability on her part. the most masculine thing i did was probably just saying firmly at the end, "i really like you. i want to see you again." she said yes but with some pause, we exchanged numbers, and i suggested a museum date. she got flustered looking for times on her phone, i said we'd figure it out. feel free to chat until then. we didn't kiss but hugged very deeply. i think we'll see each other again.
remember that i'm not interested in meaningless sex. i think i could really, really like her, and potentially do want to date her long-term. i think we're both on the same page on what we want in life right now (companionship, figuring out how to live pleasantly and well after disastrous early adulthoods, intent on avoiding children). i think i would grow to find her mannerisms and ways of speaking very endearing. i felt extremely relieved to just get all of my shit out there too, so that melted a ton of apprehension and fear. plus i found her attractive and she had a really hot ass, which was hidden from her app photos.
in sum, this business shrew was rather odd, but i really want to date her and make her happy. i think that would make me happy as well. this is the gayest thing i've ever poasted on xo. but... i'm not sure how this could have gone better.

i agree with almost all the advice itt. but also if you follow conventional wisdom and treart dating like a there's some roadmap to success you'll never inspire the "haven't met a guy like you" reaction you got this time.
most of my best outcomes have come from bending or breaking my own rules. but you should be prepared to follow best practices. for example, getting deep and emotional on date 1 is almost always bad. maybe this was one of the rare exceptions, but if it was it probably would have ended with more than a firm hug. you should avoid trauma dumping.
all things considered this seems like a huge win after a long hiatus. most dates suck. you should be encouraged. buy yeah, try to play it a little cool.

if you go head-over-heels that's a major sign it's not going to work out -- the feeling you will feel when it's right will be feeling like sliding into a pair of old shoes, *not* giddiness. the emotions you are feeling are a warning, you are just reading them wrong.
if you are serious about finding someone, here's some advice (from someone who went through every step of doing things wrong):
1. no more opening up your soul like a can of sardines, period. it's fine that you did it here if you learn the right lesson for next time
2. women aren't going to save you.
3. women are half children and you will not find a partner. nor will you find a Mommy (you can find one temporarily but they will get disgusted then leave you). you clearly want a Mommy but are in denial about it, which is bad.
4. go on 3-4 dates a week with different women. treat it as a second job; this means messaging a lot of blown out whores on messaging apps with low response rates.
5. aim for sex, not a relationship. a relationship with a woman develops from the sex, not from friendship (with rare exceptions). if you don't want sex you will get neither sex nor relationship.
6. no falling for any chick without dating for 6 months minimum. no going exclusive during that period.
7. expect to blow out and be blown out
here you opened up your soul way too prematurely, you wanted a relationship and not sex, you went head-over-heels on date one. all wrong
again, hope i'm wrong here, just my hard earned experience.

The narrator describes an unexpectedly intense first date. They initially met at a wine tent before going apple picking, which they disliked, followed by a visit to a coffee shop. The date started awkwardly but soon became comfortable as they joked and laughed. However, the mood shifted when they both opened up about personal struggles, including the narrator's baggage about death, alcoholism, and regrets, and the woman's frustrations with middle age and loneliness. Despite some awkward moments, there was strong emotional connection, eye contact, and deep conversation. The woman hinted at possible recent life changes, like a divorce, and expressed difficulty in making new connections. Though the goodbye was awkward, the narrator expressed clear interest in seeing her again, suggesting a future museum date. They shared a deep hug, and both left feeling emotionally vulnerable but intrigued.
