The Lewinsky thing really damaged his prospects for a decent legacy

From what I recall he had an LBJ style of leadership and direction but was much less abrasive towards his subordinates than Johnson infamously was. Those were pretty golden years for the country

Kinda like saying Bill Cosby was a pretty good dude outside the serial rape. NAFTA literally and without exaggeration destroyed America. (Reagan and Bush were also responsible, and fuck them for it.)

The republican caucus needs to be held to account for NAFTA. Furthermore, it’s the Senate that ratifies treaties, not POTUS.

NAFTA really wasn't a death blow anyway. the job loss totals were something like 350-450k and that was buttressed by 200-250k created (many of these, admittedly, were in lower value fields) and quite drastic gains in GDP as well as positive effects on consumer prices and the quantity and variety of goods available to purchasers. these are rough but commonly accepted estimates as the concurrent rise of silicon valley and the tech economy created a massive glut of new positions at the time and the data makes it hard to extrapolate what's creating what

it's a single event in a much longer trend towards offshoring manufacturing and production, and most of that wound up in asia. with NAFTA you could argue that it at least benefited two of the US' most valuable strategic and trade partners and was supposed to be part of a framework for a closer knit North America whereas with china i don't know what the fuck US planners were thinking, (especially after Jiang left his premiership) other than increasing short term profits at the cost of burning the citizenry

it should be distinguished then as NAFTA was supposed to be the groundswork for a more comprehensive attempt at setting up a north american schengen type treaty and the last bit of progressive and expansionary planning done by DC before 9/11 and its after effects turned most of US foreign policy into managing and mitigating imperial decline

tbf i wouldn't call someone retarded for not mentally distinguishing between the two, it's not exactly obscure but it's technical and with the way news and the news cycle work now there isn't much great coverage or dissections of the past unless you keep up with credible print media

FOX or CNN or what have you orient the vast majority of their content around the present for maximum pressure on the viewer to stay engaged and in their programmatic OODA loops

i think its a mistake to consider MSM and the flaws in information dissemination as the cause of, rather than something that caters to, human nature.

with the internet anyone curious and intelligent enough to learn things has the ability to. TV used to have much more in-depth and serious discussions. it was replaced with salicious reality tv level slop because thats what the average person wants. if fox news aired a william f buckley grade program few would watch it. and i know this because this level of discourse is available yet fuentes, destiny, piers morgan, and rachel maddow all get way more views.

tldr there's a faction of market liberal that clearly wants to reduce the great deal of people within the populace to the level of utterly manipulable cattle and it's important to avoid language or ideas that might imply that you're a part of this group as it's seeming pretty likely that once they're named and identified in the minds of the public they're not going to be around for much longer

media companies bear the lion's share of responsibility for the types and quality of content and information that they put out to the masses and these sorts of decisions are made on a top-down basis. it's hard to credibly give the majority of the blame to the average viewer when accounting for the burdens and stresses they're under on the day to day

i don't disageee with your first paragraph i just think you have the causation backwards in the second. if the media landscape disappeared people would still be the same. the media landscape became what it was because it catered to (and took advantage of) human nature.

and i know this to be true because we've seen the traditional media landscape decline significantly and people still choose salacious slop over nuance and truth. thats why i put feuntes and destiny in the mix with pier and maddow.

with an endless sea of options people still choose slop. there isn't a top-down force. in fact in fuentes case he was canceled for a time from major platforms. there are plenty of highbrow and nuanced sources at everyones finger tips.

he's the only president who didn't deficit spend like a BUCKWILD NIGGA. sure the booming economy is why he ran a surplus, but that's happened in other periods too in the last 50 years and presidents just jacked up spending or cut taxes to keep the boom fraud cycle spinning

only if you define "the economy" as exclusively a country's GDP. we used to consider stuff like cost of living, quality of life, and various other microeconomic factors and how the citizens of a country are faring economically as part of "the economy."

"the economy" should rightly, and has historically, been understand as the economic conditions overall and not just one slice of it.

housing prices (which is the vast majority of realistically what people have issues with--It's the Housing, Stupid) aren't high because of some flaw with the economy; they are a symptom of a strong economy which can't build fast enough. japan is a pretty damn good example of this: they had the highest housing prices in the world in the late 80s, and now they're dirt cheap compared to america. lack of NAFTA only makes the economy "better" in the sense that housing prices would indeed be lower if our GDP were weaker, but you also wouldn't have the level of income you do today

is your theory of the housing shortage truly that it's caused by homebuilders not being able to keep up with demands because of economic reasons (shortage of labor and materials?)

it's a combination of a) the economy being very good for the past 35 years which means more people have money to spend on houses period, b) the top 10% (who are the main benefactors of the good economy) disproportionately influencing the price of housing which buttfucks everyone else, c) not keeping up with demand. the latter is due to a combination of lib red tape, NIMBY shit, or simple land constraints (depending on where you are)

but yes, the root cause is the economy. if your economy sucks, housing is cheap (unless you live in south africa or something similar)

i mostly agree but a few comments:

1) gdp going up does indeed make housing go up in absolute terms, but not necessarily in real terms. i.e. if peoples jncomes had rose at the rate of gdp then the real price of housing would not go up even if the price in dollars did.

2) i dont think the housing prices are fairly attributed to the economy being too strong to meet demand. that statement doesnt even make sense in this context becaue with sufficient resources a functioning economy will meet a demand unless something prevents it. which is whats happening here.
