TY
My thinking with Knights is that, in the past, when I've played with my friend I've had a harder time keeping track of everything and a smaller model count could make that easier. OTOH, I agree that the low model count could hit me and also it can be harder to actually cap objectives when you only have like six dudes to work with.
I'm probably least likely to do Custodes; from what I've heard they have a lot of the same downsides as Knights and require some optimization to play.
I'll let you know what the actual lists would be at some point. I'll probably get together with him a couple times and try out the different armies and see which one I have the most fun playing with.

Right, one of the big problems with knights is controlling objectives, which is what how you actually win. One of the bigger pitfalls for new players is focusing solely on eliminating your opponents units and losing sight of board control and victory points. With chaos knights at least, you need to use a combo with demons (allied army, it adds layers of complexity) to actually get board control, so I would avoid this sort of army. Same with custodes, as you say.
Just to give you an idea, my last blood angels list from a tournament was:
- 4 hqs/characters
- 1 battleline (basic unit)
- 1 transport, 2 vehicles/walkers
- 6 elite units
It is more units than knights/custodes, but really not that many more units. Plus there aren't that many weapon loadouts, at least in my list, so it's pretty easy to keep track of. This is just an example, but there are a lot of armies that strike a good balance between super-elite and HUGE FUCKING HORDE OF CULTISTS/XENOS, IT WILL TAKE FOREVER TO MOVE 120 MODELS EACH TURN, AND YOU WILL ROLL HUNDREDS OF DICE FOR ATTACKS THAT JUST BOUNCE OFF ANYTHING THAT ISN'T OTHER CHAFF.
I'm probably hiding it pretty well, but I absolutely love 40k. The lore is nice, but the gameplay is truly fantastic. A lot of nerds hated 10th edition at first, but I think the overall direction has been good. Will be stoked to chat through armies/lists.

how can you possibly keep up with this stuff in a board game? it seems like it needs to be a PC RTS game...
does each turn take 2 hours?
