People like Bloomberg are the exception, not the rule, in urban politics. Why would a normal sane person want to run for mayor in New York or any major city? Normal sane people are also turned off by the excesses of the urban left political machines from the get go, so they have to be someone from completely the outside and with own resources to campaign independently of the existing political machine. It does happen - see Bloomberg as an example.
Here's the thing about Mamdani. He is very endearing. Extremely endearing. I've seen a bunch of his adverts and can't but help be attracted to him no matter how much I disagree with his platforms. He has such a friendly and generous smile even though I know his brain is corrupted by dangerous wacko "anti-colonialism" beliefs, a person who doesn't understand the hypocrisy of railing against social injustice and racial discrimination in a country where he, the child of two immigrants, a Muslim, a mixed race background, was given every access to privilege from a young age and just elected mayor of the largest city. Talk about the land of opportunity!
Half of Mamdani's draw is simply his personality. People like him. People did not like Cuomo. His voters hated him. That's a problem.
There will be plenty of left wingers crowing about the new dawn of progressive politics due to Mamdani's victory but ehhh. Now he has to govern in the amazingly dysfunctional New York political theater. He can't raise taxes arbitrarily so where will he get funding for his projects? You can tell every other major NY politician is wary of him, and those are the Democrats! Every bureaucrat highly defensive of their fiefdom will cut him down and tell him why XYZ can't happen. Or free buses won't really do anything because you can't rig the traffic lights to make them faster. His most likely outcome is a few free bus lines used by few people and one or two subsidized supermarkets no one goes to because it's terrible. But he'll probably coast to reelection because why not? He's such a nice guy! And we're so progressive to have a Muslim mayor! Meanwhile very little actually changes and we end up with a mini Obama situation, people deeply disappointed in him while simultaneously unable to criticize him.
