You can contribute so much more with a solo 401(k) it seems like the obvious solution. There is more paperwork is the downside.

What am I missing?

Xo bros have got to have dealt with this issue before. I'm doing a solo 401(k) because I can deduct $46k every year. I can't find anything even comparable to this.

I have solo401k as a doctor. But I can't contribute much because I have 403k w2 job and whatever is put in there is subtracted from 70k limit. If you have 401k on w2 then you can put another 70k into solo401k or sep. 401k doesn't screw up your roth conversions, while sep does, otherwise contribute equally as employer. I'll have to fill out some form once my portfolio gets to 250k but that's it.

I don't understand this at all. You are employed in a W2 job, which is apparently for a nonprofit or government (403k), yet you also have established a SE 401k that you contribute to? Didn't even know that was allowed.

If my other job is self employed I can put my 1099 earnings into solo401k. But 403k puts a serious limit on that since anything I put into 403k is subtracted from total 70k limit. If you had 5 different jobs with 401k you(or employer) could put 70k into each of them. How can you be a lawyer and know your tax laws even worse than a doctor
