Coronaviruses share genetic material with each other easily. Prior to the pandemic 4 or 5 coronaviruses had been identified as endemic to India but they were believed to be harmless. In retrospect, it seems we unederestimated that number due to availability bias, but regardless there's nowhere else on earth you'd expect coronaviruses to stew and mutate, and there's nowhere else it seems to have happened. Does anyone deny that COVID has become background noise by now, if it wasn't always just background noise from India?
