Wow Oregon is a TTT

Ranking all 18 current Big Ten schools by overall academic strength, combining undergraduate reputation, faculty, research output, graduate programs, and selectivity:

University of Michigan

Northwestern University

UCLA

University of Washington

USC

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Purdue University

University of Maryland

University of Minnesota

Ohio State University

Penn State University

Rutgers University

Indiana University

Michigan State University

University of Iowa

University of Oregon

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A few qualifications:

Michigan is the strongest all-around institution. Northwestern is more selective and prestigious at the undergraduate level, but Michigan has greater academic breadth and research strength.

UCLA is extremely close to both and could reasonably rank second.

Washington ranks above its undergraduate reputation because it is a major global research powerhouse, especially in medicine, computer science, biology, and public health.

USC would move above Washington if selectivity, undergraduate experience, alumni connections, and private-school prestige were weighted more heavily.

Illinois, Wisconsin, and Purdue are academic heavyweights. Illinois and Purdue are especially formidable in engineering and computer science, while Wisconsin is stronger across the full academic spectrum.

Minnesota is often underrated. Its graduate programs and research operation are stronger than its undergraduate admissions profile suggests.

Indiana would rank much higher for business, music, public affairs, or languages.

Iowa would rise considerably for writing, medicine, and certain health sciences

You are right. If "academically" means total academic strength rather than private-school selectivity or undergraduate prestige, UCLA has the best claim to No. 1. It combines elite undergraduate admissions, enormous research output, a major medical center, and top departments across sciences, humanities, engineering, film, law, and business.
