The WSJ reports that analytics data reveals a large fall in daily active users (DAU), and a much larger one in time spent using the app.
For a second week in a row, the number of daily active users declined on Threads, falling to 13 million, down about 70% from a July 7 peak, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The average time users spend on the iOS and Android apps has also decreased to four minutes from 19 minutes.
Elon Musk is likely breathing a sigh of relief that Twitter’s own stats have held steady, at around 200M DAU, and the average time using the platform remains about 30 minutes a day.

Twitter's Rival Threads Is Already Unraveling
BY ANDREW R. CHOW
UPDATED: AUGUST 21, 2023 9:52 AM EDT | ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: AUGUST 17, 2023 4:33 PM EDT
Mark Zuckerberg’s Twitter clone Threads rode a screaming missile out of the gate. Within seven hours of its July 5 launch, 10 million people joined the social media app, the Meta CEO claimed. Threads became the most downloaded non-game app on a launch day in the past decade, according to the market intelligence data provider Sensor Tower, and raced past 100 million users. It appeared that Zuckerberg, the once-and-future king of social media, had launched a legitimate challenge to Twitter’s dominance in the midst of ongoing turmoil at the Elon Musk-owned company.
Exactly six weeks later, Threads is fading fast. After peaking at around 50 million daily active users on Android devices worldwide in early July, that number has steadily declined and is now hovering around 10 million, according to the digital intelligence platform Similarweb. That’s less than a tenth of X’s usership. According to Sensor Tower, Threads users spend just 2.4 minutes a day on the app, down more than 80% from its early July peak. Many celebrities and regular users are no longer posting on the app, while analysts contend that the platform lacks the cultural relevance or core communities to keep people engaged.
Correction, Aug. 21
The original version of this story misstated the number of daily active users on Threads on Android devices worldwide in early July. It was around 50 million, not 50,000.

Meta’s Threads is finally available on desktop
Clare Duffy By Clare Duffy, CNN Updated 9:15 AM EDT, Tue August 22, 2023Threads users, rejoice: the app is rolling out its highly anticipated web version Tuesday.
The update — perhaps the most requested by users since Threads’ mobile-only launch last month — puts the new platform one step closer to recreating the functions offered by rival X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, and could help reignite user growth following a sluggish period.

The Threads App Just Isn’t Catching On With Users. Time To Pull The Plug?
John Brandon Senior Contributor

It’s okay to admit defeat, especially when something is not working out.
The Twitter-clone from Meta known as Threads has seen a steady decline in active users, and the recent browser version hasn’t helped much. According to SimilarWeb, the Threads app saw a modest gain when the browser version became available, but it appears as though the app users simply switched over to check out Threads.net. App usage declined by about 13% while the browser version bumped up by around the same amount (or 133,000 unique users) after launch.
Meanwhile, the daily active user count hovers around only 1.1 million these days, according to a MarketWatch report. That’s a sharp decline even from July, when about 3.4 million people were using the app.
This is all after the free-fall from the summer when several reports at the time indicated that Threads lost about 80% of its users. AdWeek noted that major brands like Wendy’s and Anthropologie stopped posting after the sudden decline.

Zuckerberg says Threads has almost 100 million monthly users
By Alex Heath and Jay Peters Oct 25, 2023
"The rumors of Threads’ early demise have been exaggerated.
Meta’s competitor to Elon Musk’s X has hit “just under” 100 million monthly users since it was released in early July, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday during his company’s quarterly earnings call.
“We’re three months in now, and I’m very happy with the trajectory,” he said, echoing the bullish comments he made about how Threads is doing during a recent interview with The Verge. “We’re now getting to the point where we’re going to be focusing on growing the community further. From what we can tell, people love it so far.”"

Meta's Oversight Board includes Threads under its purview
Reuters
February 22, 2024
Feb 22 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms' (META.O), opens new tab Oversight Board said on Thursday it would include social media platform Threads under its purview, allowing users to appeal the company's content moderation decisions.
The board said, in addition to the 130 million people using Threads, Meta will also be able to refer cases about content on the social media platform.
Board members will examine Meta's content decisions based on Instagram's community guidelines, which also apply to Threads.
"We believe we can help Threads be more transparent, take a global approach, and respect freedom of expression and other human rights," the Oversight Board said in a blog post.
yes, by outright lying about the number of people using threads you can help threads be more transparent
