Westcoastmo that lived on the East Coast for a long time like 14 years. I fear this is going to be boring.

DC will probably be entertaining and we'll be there for the fourth. will find a rooftop to see the fireworks from. any recommendations for beating crowds are welcome.

then we'll go to Phila and see the town while staying with family. then to Boston. I lived in Boston for forever so the itinerary that Chat GPT gave me sounds incredibly boring and like nothing special at all

I have to do this right? kids have to do this kind of thing once? this year also makes sense due to travel costs and America 250? Japan or literally anywhere else will be there next year?

I took a trip out there at that age from the west coast.

colonial Williamsburg was more memorable to me than anything plus all of the smithsonian which are nice because they are themed so you can just skip air and space if no one cares without having to walk a mile through the exhibits.

If your wife is a bucket list shrew then I would recommend doing the opposite and showing dottir that you can just go into a museum for 10 minutes and leave without having to spend 4 hours there

DC is great for that age and I think philly and boston are pretty boring. lots of walking and lots of standing in lines for things they dont care about = non stop whining

idk about rooftops in DC in general. i used to recommend the post office for views but i think thats the place trump turned into a hotel. dont really like that place as an adult so only go in and out

we have to do Boston and Phila though I think.

Phila - we're literally never using our vacation to do this bullshit again so this is the only chance to see family that lives there unless they come to us

Boston - I lived there for forever and always talk about it and she wants to go. I know how to have fun in Boston now that I think about it

for a girl i might think williamsburg would beat gettysburg but maybe you should do neither if you are doing 3 cities.

yes these are good points. i think we skip the side quests altogether and focus on core cities. rough dates would be:

- DC - July 3-July 6, arrive DC on July 3, sightsee 7/4-7/6, train up to Philly evening of July 6

- Philly - July 6-July 7 - arrive Philly evening of July 6, sightsee July 7 and part of July 8, depart for Boston late afternoon / early evening July 8

- Boston - arrive evening July 8, sightsee July 9, fly home July 10

what do you think of this plan? if it's too much time in DC on the front end we could do this

yes these are good points. i think we skip the side quests altogether and focus on core cities. rough dates would be:

- DC - July 3-July 5, arrive DC on July 3, sightsee 7/4-7/5, train up to Philly evening of July 5

How old are your kids

For Philly, the American Revolution museum is fairly new and clean and has stuff to do for kids. It’s near the other historical stuff like the Liberty Bell and Betsy Ross’s house. The latter two don’t have much but you don’t have to stay long.

The Franklin Institute has kid stuff as well.

The Please Touch museum is good but only for little kids.

(I’m assuming you are Loser Clique and your kids will be interested in history and science.)

i'm jock / prep I guess? i don't keep up with this stuff man. we like history, culture, and active stuff. like we'd surf if we could but no point in the slightest of traveling all the way to the east coast just to surf they're tiny waves

sounds like Philly could actually be good though? recs welcum my friend

Philly: don’t forget to get tickets ahead of time for constitution hall tour. It’s good. Check out Rittenhouse park and eat at Parc restaurant. Go to art museum and take in view from top of the stairs. Walk behind the art museum and stroll down the schuykill river trail. You can do all of this basically in one day and get a good sense of the city layout and stuff. For cheesesteak cafe Carmela in northeast Philly or do Angelo’s in south Philly. Oh and if you have time Chinatown is cool and so is the little Italy/ little Mexico/little Vietnam area at 9th and Washington. Get pho 75 if you end up there.

I have done Gettysburg on a day trip from the Philadelphia area. It is about 2.5 hours drive there, a good 2 hours on site, and then back. If you go on a Sunday and drive through Lancaster instead of on the interstate you will see a bunch of Amish people and buggies

I’d get up early go to Gettysburg’s and then come back to Philly for dinner somewhere then head out. Gettysburg is just empty fields not much to see if you’re not a history buff. Second the recommendation to drive through Lancaster and see the Amish. Maybe buy a pie or some other homemade treats from one of the farm stands or country stores.

Agree with most of this but he’s not dragging a 9 year old to the Northeast or deep South Philly. For cheesesteaks, probably best to go to Passyunk, do the tourist Pat’s or Geno’s thing, and walk around the Italian Market.

Angelos isn’t Deep South Philly imo. They can walk to the 9th street market from there. Also they have eggplant parm that’s really good for vegetarians. I didn’t realize he had younger kids. Agree cafe Carmella is far off the beaten path. Oh and also go to reading terminal market. It has AC and a lot to see and eat.

Jesus Christ you autists

Gettysburg is cool to see as a 40+ male when it’s a decent temperature out. A 9 year old girl from California will fucking DESPISE it. If you go, plan to spend no more than 2.5-3 hours there doing some kind of tour of the monuments etc. She will not give a flying fuck about different battle maneuvers etc.

Going to DC for 250 will be cool, but $$$$. Not sure how different it will be from normal DC Independence Day. I would recommend you instead go to NYC and see the tall ships which will be a once in a lifetime display. (IDK how you would do an east coast tour that doesn’t include NYC.)

Boston is ok, but probably 1.5 days worth of shit to do with a 9 year old girl.

yeah we're not going to Gettysburg I've decided. Unless we can go on 7/2 and go out to see the reenactment, which goes from 7/3-7/5 apparently. actually it's very possible we go to Gettysburg.

as far as cost, the hotels are expensive but hotels in AmeriKKKa have long been exorbitant. Flights for this 3-leg journey seems expensive but not as bad as I was expecting. are you saying like museum tix and restaurants and shit are going to be more expensive than usual?

DC it is as there is way more to do there with a kid than NYC. NYC will be it's own trip

Every city is going to be boring if you do the typical tourist shit. Do you really want to see the house that Betsy Ross grew up in?

Yeah, you could find the best philly cheesesteak. You could also go to Pat's where there is a spot on the ground that says Sylvester Stallone stood here while filming Rocky.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Philly despite growing up about 90 minutes away in NJ.

Some memories:

My mom took me and my little brother sightseeing with my grandmother who was born and raised there. We took a shortcut through the ghetto. I was 7, my little bro was 5. I knew it was the ghetto, it looked bad, but I don't remember seeing anyone in the street or on the stoop. It was eerie quiet and empty. My mother and grandmother were trying to walk fast without appearing to walk fast. My brother yelled out, "IS THIS THE GHETTO?" and they panicked and were all, "SHHHHH!"

We caught a bus and the city bus actually had reclining seats. This is 1977. So I put back my seat and then a black guy with a huge fro comes on the bus, sits right behind me and says, "Raise up, cool dude."

Fast forward 20 years and I was visiting a good friend from undergrad who lived in Westchester, PA. He had to work during the day so I biked into Philly from Westchester, there was a 25 mile trail that took you right into Philly.

This is 1997 so before cell phones were popular at least before I ever had one. I looked at the trail on a paper map and was all, ok, I got this and headed it.

I was racing mountain bikes at the time and did that 25 mile ride on my mountain bike. When I got into Philly it emptied out onto this highway that was closed off for a couple hours on a Saturday. I didn't know this until I got there. It was flooded with people running and on bikes and I got into an impromptu race with some other dude on his mountain bike. He beat me and it is stands as the only time I ever lost an informal road race, but I did just bike 25 miles from Westchester so I had a pretty decent excuse, that faggot probably lived down the block.

I biked over to the Rocky statue, climbed the stairs, got a Pat's cheesesteak and headed home.

When you go to Boston, take your kid to the Cheers bar. I don't even think they filmed it there, but he won't know.
