as a nickname for someone who preferred water to the sour ale offered by the innkeeper or ale wife. The name comes from the Middle English words drink(en), meaning "(to) drink", and water.

The reason coffee and tea became so popular in Europe was because they offered the benefits of alcohol, but they were also stimulants. The idea of a drink making you more alert was revolutionary. It's why cafes became meeting places for intellectuals, and it could be what ultimately fueled European development in the 18th and 19th centuries. Even if the stimulant effect of caffeine wasn't a factor, the mere fact that Europeans were consuming less alcohol meant they spent more of their lives sober.
