you could fill a library with all the shit that's been written about this game's universe. but at the end of the day it's just space marines shooting aliens or something. are there British liberal artists who maek 25K pounds a year crafting all this lore?

I have a couple of smaller armies. I mostly keep up with it through a friend who plays competitively (non-US) and never really played too much myself---I just like the sculpts and the paints and the aerosol smell of the primer

It is an extraordinarily expensive hobby to get into even and especially in the Rountree era so I would recommend getting Tabletop Sim first and playing a few games to see if you like it before dropping $$$ on a starter army

the new skirmish game for the fantasy version (spearhead) is a really good way to see if you like tabletop wargaming without too much investment (money or time) now, but it's not as popular, unfortunately.

I have an Elucidian Starstriders killteam and that's (KT) also a bit more palatable than a whole 2k pt game or whatever. Some of the specialist games are pretty good (I heard the AoS mordheim-like was really fun---is that what you're talking about?)

The Necromunda reboot stuff is very cool looking but I don't know a soul IRL who plays this stuff

i'm not familiar with the standalone games or necromunda, but the latter seems more fun if you have a friend group and are just messing around.

i like kill team, but it's really it's own thing and doesn't translate well to bigger (even 500-1000pt) games. spearhead boxes (~$120-160) are about 500 points from a pre-fixe list, usually with 2 battleline units (~20 dudes), 2 elite units (~6-10), and a warlord. it's basically warhammer on rails with some randomization elements, like there's a "twist" that changes rules every round to keep it interesting even when you're repeating matches, so it gives you a better idea of what bigger games are like imo. if you like spearhead, you'll probably like >1k games. kill team, whether you like or dislike it, doesn't provide a good sense of it.

Games Workshop has a staff of maybe a dozen writers. Everything they write is in coordination with GW itself - so they can't just make shit up as they wish, they need approval. There are probably one or two who could stand alone as SciFi writers outside of a 40K context, e.g. Dan Abnett.

A huge % of writer time was spent on fleshing out the Horus Heresy books but those are now done. In terms of 40k, GW will periodically require them to write books around whatever new model line they are doing - so they release an Angron model and require books around Angron etc. Those are typically shit.

There is some speculation that they will move on to the "Scouring" now that the Horus Heresy is done, which is basically where the traitors are hunted back to the eye of terror and which sets up the current 40K universe (legions broken in to chapters, emperor half-dead on the throne, primarchs leaving or dying, establishment of the Inquisition, canonization of the Emperor as a God etc.)

a lot of this sort of thing comes organically from when dorks had IRL gaming groups for pen & paper games. supposedly old elder scrolls was similarly just a few guys' homebrew fantasy setting, and i'm guessing a lot of games started out similarly. the core of "hey what if we had tolkein but in space and let's throw in xenomorphs and gundams" probably just took a couple of years. i've never read any of the books, but the real creative fire probably burned bright and faded quickly in the 80's/90's before blizzard coopted that core for starcraft.

Pdfs are up on various sites

8th has some good stuff (I think Haemonculus Covens were 8th? Couple of other subfaction books too. Admech have some of the best looking models in the game attached to the worst rulesets) but around then you had this infamous corporate "style guide" form of writing popping up that led to the "The Space Wolves wolved wolfishly" and "Khornate Blood secretors bloodily take blood for the blood God" type dreck that players from older periods lament. Lot of that in AoS unfortunately. Branding, "stay on theme" type army guides to cement product ideas in players' heads

I forget the artist's name but 3rd edition rb/codexes in particular had all the dissipating ink black and white art that really coined "grimdark", that's why i got into it originally way back

iirc 3rd ed tyranids had quality art of humans getting ripped open and eaten left and right by bugs, probably as gory as that one kino chaos book for WHFB, and early necron lore (also 3rd I think) was very fun and lovecraftian compared to the senile egyptian pokemon quest that ward wrote over it in 5th (i think). flayed ones, diaz daemonettes, detailed passages about brain eating beetle guns (shaped like Giger phalluses), it was a wild west middle schooler's playground of ideas in that era

give me a keynote slot at a cultural history conference and i'll argue that warhammer's eclipsing of the historical reenactment genre of miniature wargaming that was so popular in the 50's and 60's symbolizes a broader, popular disenchantment with the pax americana and the romanticization of the wars that laid its foundations.

1. tyranids (have at least a 3000 pt army, i even have stuff still in boxes. in fact, i bet i have like 5000 pts of these fuckers)

2. aeldari (have like 3000 pts, including avatar of khaine and the yncarne)

3. Tau (have maybe 2000, haven't played with this one a lot)

4. space wolves (maybe 1500, played once and got destroyed)

5. thousand suns (1500 pts, not sure what i was thinking, too complicated an army for a guy running a law practice to bother with. i have the magnus the red model)

6. orks (i have painted exactly one model, the mekgun. but i have like 2500 pts worth).

i also have a titan that i painted and think it looks kinda cool. if i ever start playing the space wolves, i may use it as an ally.

i have a small tsons army, and yeah they are pretty much space wizards the faction, separate resource for spells and everything. you can use magnus in games, and it can make list building pretty boring for them. just do 1/4th of your army is an "auto-include". i'm hoping GW revamps them next year and makes them less reliant on giant HQs. it can be pretty swingy, as you say. weirdly in AoS, the tzeentch army is very control-oriented. maybe tsons will go in that direction too.

btw i'm gay.

I played dark eldar so it goes without saying that I am also gay

I know you can use him but i thought primarch point costs made it impractical. The AoS tzeentch army has some very neat models with the new cultist stuff iirc. I was looking at a used Deepkin army when they came out but I don't think I have the patience for TT gaming anymore (even tho AoS's whole thing is accessibility)

Last thing I played was Blackstone Fortress

i like painting AoS more tbh, but it's much less played. blackstone fortress was before my time, but the traitor guard models are 180 and i wish more was done with that whole concept game-wise.

have you picked up any other hobbies since? i partially got the idea (weirdly) for getting into warhammer from zurich threads, when i realized i would need something to do when i was learning how to cope with boring sober nights. i'm starting to take it that hobbies in general are a nice thing to have in middle age.

Hobbytime goes to vidya and reading now. I only know what I do about post 5th from watching TT sim games/streams/40k group chats. I enjoy seeing the game evolve and the devs trying to wrangle the complexity back in

During COVID tt games got a lot more popular though so it may be possible to find a regular group that isn't just neckbeard types

i used drukhari a few times as allies with eldar. they have some great units. they have a barge with 3 dark lances that is devastating. it's only like 110 pts too.

Raider spam with iirc blasters or dark lances was extremely OP and very cheap pointswise

Archon retinue stuff was also potentially game-breaking for a while. I have a few HC models put together but never painted them

i went sober and replaced my obsessive focus with a fish tank and warhammer hobby. i have spent easily $100k on the fish thing (probably more), and likely $30-40k on warhammer.

yea i have a friend who lives in frederick (about 45 mins from here) and we play.

ive been busy af for like 10 months with work so we don't play much. we are playing saturday tho.

part of the problem is i've become obsessed with making like 700k/year by 2027 so i have been obsessively trying to build a bigger book of business.

i'd be curious how space wolves play. my main armies are blood angels and csm, but i've never encountered or even looked into sw at all.

Thousand Sons look awesome but I have no idea how the fuck you're supposed to paint all of that intricate detail, look at this shit:

https://www.warhammer.com/app/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99120102067_ExhaltedSorcerers02.jpg?fm=webp&w=920&h=948

It does seem like the meta armies are basically an identical set of magnus + ahriman + a few other sorcerers. Probably a good army to pay a professional to paint given low model count + hard as fuck to do

re painting that's not too bad for a hero. AoS now has some models that I wouldn't even know where to begin on. check out the nighthaunt black coach or nagash https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/Deathlords-Nagash?srsltid=AfmBOorwPzhdfAsESc-uU-1zF4Pd_aDcN9YYc-hZ0XOL9j8VnR0z0Ao3

do you airbrush? I just got an Iwata compressor with some brushes but my intention is to paint maquettes and sculptures and shit. I guess for minis you would just use acrylic brushes right

i dont but people have done some crazy shit with them.

i was about to buy one, but my hobby got sidetracked by my career (see above, for some reason after decades of phoning it in, i'm trying to become a rainmaker. i have no idea why i am doing this.)

it isn't that because i've already figured out that if i stopped saving for retirement and just let my wife's 401k and mine coast for 20 years, we'll have like 12m or more.

it just became an obsession. when i split up with my mistress and was about to get back together with my wife, i was a severely underpaid service partner in biglaw (making mid 300s, and yes it was an actual biglaw firm and i was in the dc office). i told her when we split up that i'd be making 600k in 5 years.

that was march 2022. this year i made just over 500k. i am almost there.

Henry Cavill plays Custodes. Gary Oldman plays Admech. Supposedly Will Smith was a fan of WHFB

Lot of people are into GW products, they just don't hang out at the stores and play

Some of the books are legit master works. Others are shit. The Eisenhorn books certainly better than an Grisham novels.
