I wonder sometimes if real Mesoamerican "elites" whatever is left of them see the attempts at e.g. Aztec or Mayan cultural revival through art and touchstones and what have you and think the same things that Africans do when they see the we-wuzzery Wakanda Forever stuff that's plagued the African American consciousness in the prior years I enjoy the company and temperament of Peruvians whenever I've come across them. I knew a Peruvian girl briefly and she was singularly calm and something of a grounding rod whenever I was around her. Some Brazilians can also be like this, but Brazil is vast and the provinces vary drastically in culture, temperament, and ethnic composition. Argentinians are obnoxious and saddled with probably the most toxic form of the colonial mentality in the continent; they have some of the worst traits of both East coast Americans and the Spanish combined into a singular package. I actually really like Mexicans as they are wry and worldly in the right sorts of ways and can be surprisingly cold in a refreshing sort of way (not frigid) but this is a biased selection as most of the people from that locale that I've really gotten to understand were from the upper strata of Mexican society, usually on vacation |
