But you are often flat for a number of years re equity but instead get a big bonus. Firm would rather pay bonus than give equity as it’s hard to move people down in equity.
Yes, they have to buy you out. The hope is your buy out is worth more than your buy in as you essentially just buy shares.
Not really gonna buy a Porsche. |

My offer is 475k guaranteed, with two bonuses: $200/hour for all hours billed over 1875 and 20% of originations over $475k. Without a book, the firm would likely offer me around $400k with some variation of those bonuses. I stole the book from biglaw. Rainmaker did zero work and shares no client credit so I was getting fucked on comp. I still talk to other partners there and he’s doing the same thing. Not sure why they don’t just leave.
I’m a management side traditional labor attorney and it’s nearly impossible to find labor attorneys rn so you can do okay without a book. I know a guy who just took a nonequity partner job with McDermott and he’s evidently getting like $800 with no book. He has a $1.5m book but they’re going to have to fire him bc his rate is going from $750-800 to $1500. Good luck to him I guess. I have no idea why that firm thinks they can build a traditional labor practice at those rates.
funny thing about the guy who just got hired at McDermott - my firm was about to make him an offer without talking to me. he actually called me to tell me about it himself. when i was hired here, i was told that the labor practice was "mine" to build however i wanted. not sure why they're trying to hire another guy but whatever the reason, it can't be good so i'm out. so the firm's labor clients will be part of my book now. there will be nobody here to do the work.

i have an associate who works with me on everything and i push a lot down to her. i think around $300 of my book was done by her.
if i take this offer, i will be nonequity but i am told that you have to be a retard not to get equity in 2 years so it's a lock. i want to know more about how they figure equity comp. my current firm is very quick to de-equitize people, which i don't like. but the really big thing is that they sold this as "my" practice but are trying to hire someone else. fuck that shit. i have no sway around here so i should leave. |
