Cowgod, did PS1 have more good RPGs, fighters, or side scroll shooters?

what ps1 fighting game was better than virtua fighter 2 team battle? toshinden? lmao.
shooters there was no comparison whatsoever. radiant silvergun was a full console gen ahead.
i dont even know what you could hold out as a top side scroller (Tomba or Klonoa?) but i guarantee it would look like a piece of shit next to Astal.
Saturn had the best version of NBA Jam.

name some names faggot.
you don't seem familiar with the saturn at all. i don't know what you would hold out as the best ps1 fighter but most of them were choppy as fuck and not playable today, not to mention the worst d-pad of all time for fighting games. virtua fighter 2 was a perfect 60fps and you can still have a good time with it in 2024. And the saturn absolutely mauled the PSX on 2d fighting games like Xmen. The PSX versions had many compromises.
I can't even engage with you on shmups because I have no idea what you are holding out as a good game in this genre. Einhander? Raycrisis? Thunder Force V? All very mid games that aren't in the same class as the saturn heavy hitters.
Let me guess--you didn't own a saturn and further, you didn't own an action replay 4m plus to allow imports + RAM expansion at the same time.

I just went through my entire Saturn library, in detail, to pull out all of the shmups. Radiant Silvergun was by far the most outstanding title. But otherwise, there were not many options, and a lot of them were found on other systems.
PS1 quite literally has exponentially more shmups and the jump in graphics/etc isn't really that different between the best Saturn ones and the best PS1 ones. I can easily say, with my current knowledge, that PS1 is the better shmup system, by a mile.
I also think that the PS1 has a ton more fighter games, and absolutely a million more RPGs.
I'm curious as to your assertions and need some examples of how I am wrong. TYIA.

lmao faggot, here it is blow by blow. The victory goes to Sega and that's without even counting Panzer Dragoon and Zwei which would be enough to trump the entire PSX library by themselves. PSX had more jrpgs and twisted metal and metal gear, but you're an abject retard if you think it was ahead in shmups, side scrollers, or fighting games. you basically have to pretend the entire japanese saturn library doesn't exist to take that position.

"Overall, as you can see, Saturn has a larger and much more versatile library of shmups"

its the holidays, haven't had time yet to get back to this and I'm working right now.
I will note that you specifically cited Panzer Dragoon. That is not a shmup, any more than Star Fox is.
For now and until I am able to fully research this, I stand by my assertion that PS1 is by far the superior console for schmups.

I did a full analysis and review of the Saturn vs PS1 shmup question. Literally sat down with pen and paper to make this comparison.
I understand that you mentioned the Saturn’s “Japanese library” and I will admit that of my 285 Saturn games, I am unaware which are Japanese only titles and which are not. With that caveat, I can only compare that 285 game catalog to my 884 PS1 game catalog.
That said, I pulled ALL of the shmups that I could for the Saturn, and I listed all of the schmups that I added to my “favorites” on my PS1 library. Let me repeat – these are ALL of the Saturn schmups vs the PS1 schmups that I favorited (meaning there are more schmups on the PS1 that I did not favorite). Please see as follows my complete lists. I added an asterisk next to what I consider “exceptional” schmup titles.
I count 7 exceptional PS1 schmups, to Saturn’s 3. A few of these are the same title on both platforms. The results speak for themselves IMHO, please let me know how I am wrong. And no the Panzer Dragon series is not a schmup (it’s a rail shooter) and I did not count any third person flight shooters as schmups (but PS1 has a lot more of these as well).

I don’t think people back then played video games for like 2200 hours a year as adults (making the kid equivalent what? 3000k?)
Like there are only so many birthdays and Christmas’s. Yes the fighters were good. Nobody in the west plays shoot ‘em up’s. The easiest shoot em up is more frustrating than Margit. There is no chill shoot ‘em up. Contra or Castlevania are chill by comparison.
Like im a High Loser with no job and yes I can speak to the intellectual merits of Thunder Force but I can’t actually play these games, they’re hard af in a deliberately Sisyphean way
