True Detective Season 1 works for the same reason, plus it was superbly written and Harrelson and McConaughey delivered great performances.
Not every prestige TV shows needs to be a slog through 10 episodes with the hopes of an epic payoff at the end. People cared about the endings of the Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Mad Men because they were actually invested in the characters, not some mystery box bullshit. |

Like they're clearly trying to make him a creep, but also, he has probably the best moral compass on the show.
He works hard, tries not to do drugs, doesn't want to have the weird rich person threesome, is pretty respectful of the weird psychic connection girl even though she's a bitch the whole time to him.
He reminds me of the main guy from season 1 who everyone hated because he was the rich momma's boy - but when you thought about it - he really wasn't that bad and was basically 100% correct in almost every interaction (the hotel was fuckig him over on the room, lying about it - his new wife shouldn't be taking on some new freelance project during their honeymoon - etc...) |
