There is a huge drop off in the quality between top level, elite players and everyone else.

With the boys, the top players from age 8 on are outrageously good. But even 5 levels below, there are good players and it's the same game but a different level.

On the girls' side, the highest leagues play with the same sophistication as the boys though at a slower pace. Mid tier and below it might as well be retards chasing butterflies in a field. You don't really have to be an elite player to be on a D3 team.

A friend of mine has his 8 year old daughter training 22 hours/week. She's on 2 teams (1 academy and 1 town travel) practicing 5 times/week with annual costs of around $5k for both. She also does private training sessions 3X/week at $60 so another $10k/year.

So for her, let's say it's $15k for 10 years or $150k.

Private clubs barely existed back in the day. It was all [town name] soccer club. even the best kids who went on to play in college played for these teams.

It was only in the late 90s/early 2000s that non-town associated clubs started popping up. In NJ at least, some of them are still around and e.g. PDA est.in 1998 and Matchfit est. 2001.

Now it's all private academies. Football Academy in NJ was established like 3 years ago and already got accepted into the MLS Next.
