Once a cure for a disease is discovered, the company or the subsidiary of the company that owns it is nationalized by the government in the form of a forced sale. Maybe after a certain period (like when their patent horizon ends) In the US, a forced sale is tax free under law, so investors and companies that develop cures achieve enormous returns which then become property of humanity. Maybe the people that develop this also get a voucher like with Rare Disease Indications. Who knows.
If I was running things I would do this immediately and anyone who opposed this approach I would have shot.
Also the article talks about the Hepatitis C cure. The Goldman analysts say that now the companies sales are falling - sure I get that, but they're not thinking about the total cash flow realized from the cure. I'm sure the company only paid a few billion for the science, but they cashed out 10x that much easily. That is a huge IRR. |
