The collapse of Austin’s real estate market was obvious

Hilarious watching all the Californians running there in 2020 and spending insane cash for tiny houses. Now they’re stuck selling those shitboxes at a 30% discount after they realized Austin sucks

Cr. It's for nohousemos. I grew up in a palatial monument of a home in suburbia and have always had a hard on for house-havers.
I never respected my father more than when he owned a 3 car garage. Our driveway was more like a parking lot.
The sickest aspect of any home is having a big basement for throwing parties. Also just love being on your own lot and not having to share life with randos. I don't think there's anything more degrading than having to share your space with another person.
The only reason I could think of to voluntarily live in a condo downtown is if I were absolutely committed to the drunken hookup lifestyle. I would have to be fully committed to drinking and sleeping around. Then I could see the point. It's really just maximizing the utility of a space for sleeping with strangers. That's the only upside I can envision.

TWIST:
Look more carefully. The view out of the windows of that particular apartment (every one they show which means every one) is… a parking garage.
Some of the units in that building probably have a good view… but not that one!
lmao

It is fine. I was just in Dallas and the biggest issue is that everything is overcrowded because of all the new people.

Austin fizzled because it never materialized as a real tech hub and it got flooded with so many muds and PMC libs that all of its cultural charm disappeared
the main benefit it had a decade+ ago was that it "felt" pretty white in most places. Had segregation a little closer to northern cities
The problem with the south and ESPECIALLY Texas isn't the raw demographic percentages, it's that it's not segregated. There's browns and nigs EVERYWHERE. Chicago is a nigger infested shithole on paper but the nigs are mostly kept in nig confinement areas
in Austin this used to be I35, but the libs dug too deep and too greedily. They invaded the East and the nig tide came with a vengeance

Austin is still really segregated. It doesn't even have that big of a nigger problem. It has a lot of Mexicans though. Like, a lot. Whole swaths of the city are straight out of Latin America.
The problem with Austin is the white areas are very expensive. It is the most expensive part of Texas outside of like 1 zip code in Dallas where all the Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban types live.
And all the tech people and nouveau riche coming in pushed out the stoner/slacker class of post-collegiate burnouts whose life plan was to hang around and two-step for the next 30 years.
So yes the underlying culture is dead, the nice parts are unaffordable. But I wouldn't say it's not still segregated. You just have to have money to live in the nice part. This is why all the working class whites live in Georgetown and Round Rock and shit. The white flight was all to suburbia. So now the whole city feels like a bedroom community for intact white families with 2 kids, which is kind of intrinsically boring.

south austin and san antonio's northern exurbs gradually merging together has led to some of the worst traffic in the country, especially considering the city's relatively small size.

it also has an extremely annoying climate where it will just sit stagnant at 100 to 110-degree daily highs for weeks on end, with plenty of humidity from the river and the greenery, or suddenly pop up to the high-80's on fucking christmas of all days. it lacks the true clarifying heat of a desert (it never gets that THAT hot), but it gets hot enough to be extremely annoying.
for my tastes, it's one of the worst climates in america.

During COVID there was a huge price shift to southern red states.
Now as our overlords push return to work, and as the north removes their draconion restrictions, many people are moving back.
I'm with DeSantis on this one - how does a bunch of rich tech guys buying up all the homes help Floridians? It doesn't. Good riddens.
The idea that "home equity" is something to be valued is the biggest corporatist bullshit ever. Translate that to food. Imagine if someone told you that bread was now $10,000, but its a good thing because you already own a loaf of bread - so you can borrow against your bread at 8% interest.

FL real estate taxes are actually average and are significantly lower than the liveable areas of the Northeast.

but *no one* wants development around them. it just brings in undesirables. why would they ever want this?
i don't know why people think they can convince or shame or scare "NIMBY" people into abandoning their own self interest. if i already own a home in a decent area, no, i don't want any development whatsoever built there. and no, it's not "good" for the area that i live in to build a bunch of high density housing so that undesirables can move in and drive "doordash" and "uber" around and collect public benefits. this is unequivocally bad, and no amount of sophistry or screeching or emoting is ever going to change this fact
the anti NIMBY whining is so fucking tiresome

the problem is that undesirables exist, and that it is illegal by letter of law to discriminate against them, as well as the greatest sin according to our state religion. that is the actual problem. it doesn't have anything to do with housing or building or codes or "boomers" or "the corporations" or whatever the fuck else cowardly-ass people try to blame it on. if you could build high density housing and ban undesirables from using it, no one would have a problem with it other than the undesirables, who would be ignored
it's undesirables, period, that's it, there's nothing else going on here. it's the same cause as every other problem in our country. shocking, i know, really shocking stuff

Austin’s Music Scene is officially Done. The Music portion of SXSW cancelled from here on out. The Austin City Council destroyed Austin. It’s too dangerous for tourists. The music industry in general is a hollow shell of what it once was. Any Chamber of Commerce member or City Council or local news person calling this “The Live Music Capitol of the World” should pack their BS and leave.
