I met a rich as fuck immigrant family who came here in the 80s to work in nursing homes and wipe old people's asses. They now own a nursing home empire. This is the typical rags to riches story. People with mettle and grind and hyperfocus on their business. You're right Eisner's case is rare. He oversaw the company during a classic period of immense creative and financial success. These people are insanely rare.

Most people who have taste and vision and are capable of great beauty have no ambition, drive, or practical sense. And most people who are rich enough to design the Taj Mahal live in ugly shitboxes and would never notice the difference.

But you're right about one thing. The elites of yore tried to emulate old money and buy class. They hired artisans. Today? Not so much. It's Queen of Versailles shit. Upjumped proles who think luxury is you can buy anything at Wal-Mart. There does seem to be a cultural shift where no one is embarrassed about being tacky. No one is competing with the House of Windsor. Really does seem like everything has changed. Age of social media and too many immigrants. The cultural decline of WASPs. It's funny my father who is a wealthy boomer with a lifelong net zero interest in materialism whatsoever the one thing he judges people hard on is their suits. He owns one dress watch, he has never bought a sportscar. But he is ruthless about tacky suits. He can look at a suit in the blink of an eye tell you what's wrong with it. He keeps a mental list of whose suits are Right and Wrong. Wrong suits are basically a crime against humanity. They are Rules goddamnit. He says people who don't have the right suit he can't take seriously and aren't worth listening to. It's funny that's how I feel about people who believe in trans kids. A full write off. That's how he is about suits. If someone is on TV with an ill fitting suit he has to leave the room. Call me when they have a good suit.
