I’m going to be out of town this weekend and 14 year old has club soccer games all over the place. Don’t live anywhere near any of teammates. The manager is a psycho and if my kid misses some/all it could fuck up his season just as it’s getting started. I would think I could schedule Ubers to get him to the takes but they can end off schedule so wouldn’t know how to get him home. Anyone ever been in a similar situation and figure out a solution?

I just assumed you couldn’t have bed unless you were 16 or something. If he can have it the. I guess problem solved (but I’m going to spend an incredible amount on Ubers).

Ah. Uber for teens - didn’t know that was an option on the app. For as much toxicity as this boart has brought into my life it does occasionally add value.

That was before the insanity of club leagues where you have sporting events 40-70 miles apart.

also, you're leaving your 14 year old home alone the entire weekend? I'd be more worried about that than him taking an uber.

he should just leave his car with the kid and tell him to yolo then. guys in my high school actually did do that all the time. one kid got caught driving in 8th grade and still was able to get his license when he turned 16. I had a paper route for some weekly shitpaper and I started taking my mom's car around age 13 or so.

when i was 14 my parents went to mexico for a month during summer break
i was completely fine, my uncle dropped off groceries once a week and i watched both of my younger siblings
by that age you should be able to live two days without mommy and daddy

This is terrifying - i.e., the fact that your kid is in some sport that is treated like the pros and has games apparently hours away.
I want to avoid this at all costs. I think I am going to allow only one sport and it has to be played for the local school. No club sports or 'travel teams'. What a ridiculous thing.

I assume the local catholic school only plays other schools in the area. Its a populated region. There'd be no need to travel over an hour to another school to play theres more than enough kids around here.
as to why, I don't think its beneficial to the kids at all and that it can be harmful to the families. I suppose if they show a great deal of promise in athletics I'd reconsider. But I don't know a single kid growing up who did all this stuff and went to play DI. There were some who played DI sport but they weren't in special leagues.

for the last 30 years, the only sport that this could possibly be true for is HS football. basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, and all of the more niche sports have long been dominated by travel leagues, camps, showcases, etc. what you are saying is simply not true anywhere in the country. it's theoretically possible that there is some elite sports league that only plays local games (e.g., NYC catholic basketball leagues), but there is no D1 program that only recruits locally

because:
- it's 180 to see your kids compete in sports, especially a higher level
- travel sports are fun for the kids and create memories that will last a lifetime
- it's good bonding with the kids
- etc
Note: none of the above is relevant if you are azn

You just have one kid who is 14 and male? Uber is fine. But I do hear horror stories from parents in Long Island where teen girls take these to parties all over Nassau county and they can sometimes talk the uber drivers into buying booze for them. But just a boy traveling during the day should be fine and I haven’t heard anything creepy like kids getting molested or abducted. (Uber ha the driver’s information and I’m sure the drivers assume the kids have cell phone dialed to 911 ready to report them if there’s any funny business.)
FWIW I used to travel between NYC and boarding school like this for breaks, etc. and it was never a big deal. (And a nice experience of independence at that age.)

"he isn't good enough friends with to get a ride from"
This is the key. Sounds like this whole setup is stupid. Sure, there is this: https://www.uber.com/us/en/ride/teens/
But more to the point, I question whether this is actually a good use of everyone's time and effort.

Say what you will about our feckless divorced boomer parents, at least they weren’t too autistic to figure out how to carpool. Sure they sometimes had huge explosive arguments over shit like who had to do an extra trip or someone being 5 minutes late for everything or getting stuck with an extra kid riding with no seatbelt. But at least they could look other parents in the eye or dial a phone and work out some kind of plan.
