Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, Nick spent his early years on a farm in small-town Iowa before moving to the tough border town of Nogales, Arizona. As one of the only Caucasian kids in his school, he faced relentless bullying and discrimination. Through resilience, he learned to speak Spanish, defend himself, and embrace Hispanic culture.

At home, life was far from easy. Basic necessities like hot water, electricity, and food were often scarce. By the 5th grade, Nick was already working to buy his own clothes and meals. Fully independent by age 15 and legally emancipated at 16, he took on jobs as a paperboy, farmhand, mechanic, and construction worker—all while pursuing his education and preparing for a future of service.

Military Service & Early Academic Achievements

At 17, Nick enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a medic, later transferring to the U.S. Army, where he served in an Air Defense Artillery Unit. During his six years of military service, he maximized the educational opportunities available through tuition assistance and the G.I. Bill, earning a Bachelor’s Degree by age 19, along with three Associate Degrees, and making significant progress toward a Master’s Degree.

Nick also trained as a firefighter and volunteered at a local fire department while attending college and, later, law school. At just 20 years old, he transitioned from the Air Force to the Army, continuing to serve while pursuing his legal education.
